Claiming to be one of the four famous buildings in Chengdu, Sanhualou is also considered to be a gathering place for ancient literati and scholars in public opinion. The name Sanhua Academy is taken from Sanhua Building, which started with the first small bookstore established ten years ago, and has opened 9 stores in various areas of Chengdu so far. While witnessing the development of Chengdu, Sanhua Academy has also become a cultural business card of Chengdu.
Among all the bookstores under the umbrella of Sanhua Academy, Sanhua Shuwu in Kuanzhai Alley is the one with the longest history. It is a wooden house the size of a roadside newsstand, and the bookstore has a small collection of books, mainly literature, history, and philosophy, with a small number of children's books, periodicals and magazines at the door, and some simple cultural and creative products are sold. The bookstore occupies a small area and has no reading seats, and even if it is only standing, it can only accommodate about five people at most. In contrast, the Jianshan Bookstore, which is across the street, is more reasonably planned. Founded in 2010, Jianshan Bookstore is a sister store of Sanhua Academy, which has collected a wealth of historical and cultural monographs on Chengdu with the theme of local culture and cultural tourism. The bookstore is decorated with simple decorations, desks with paint off, ceiling fans with several leaves, old black and white photos hanging on the walls, and the clerks are uniformly dressed in Republican uniforms. In the storefront, Jianshan Bookstore has expanded a lot, not only increasing the number of books, but also setting the backyard and upstairs as areas for drinking tea and reading books.
In addition to the above, the other branches of Sanhua Academy also have their own characteristics. For example, the Chengdu Museum and the Sanhua Academy jointly launched the Wenbo Book Hall Sanhua, the bookstore has set up a special area for Chengdu history and culture books, and sells cultural and creative products rich in Chengdu cultural elements, such as mobile phone cases, postcards, etc. In addition, there will be occasional meetings with writers, readers' salons and other events. The Sanhua Academy in Pingle Ancient Town, Qionglai, integrates cultural elements such as guqin and ancient porcelain, and also turns the bookstore into an inn, covering the two major functions of reading and check-in. The Sanhua Academy on Tiexiangsi Water Street combines the local tea culture and incense culture, and sets up a waterfront tea room corridor to sell tea sets, tea cakes and other related products.
Sanhua Academy is not the oldest bookstore in Chengdu, nor is it as famous as some large bookstores, but for many Chengdu people, it has long evolved into a meaning and sentiment over the years.
