M99 is the largest craft bar chain in Chengdu, with five branches in Chengdu and expanding to Chongqing since the opening of its first store in Hongpailou in 2014. The reason for such rapid success is that it focuses on bottled beer, which is marketed in a form similar to a craft beer supermarket.
M99's wine list is far more extensive than any other bar on the list. Among the many bottled beers that are difficult to choose, we find the Goose Island Bourbon Stout BCBS, which is an aged beer with a different flavor because it is served in bourbon barrels. It has the typical black-brown color of Imperial Stout, with brown foam and a strong coffee aroma. On the palate, there are notes of roasted malt, coffee, and vanilla, followed by the alcoholic feeling of the whisky after the barrel, which is very round and smooth overall, and rich in layers. Most of these bottles of beer are criticized for not being placed in the wine cabinet, and the hot summer in Chengdu can spoil the taste of the beer in the mouth, so drinkers are advised to choose their beers from the wine cabinet.
Several of M99's stores have a beer supermarket style. When you enter the door, you will see neatly arranged shelves full of all kinds of bottles of beer. The size of each store is also acceptable, and it does not look cramped. If you're not a drinker who doesn't like the quiet atmosphere, you can opt for the Hongpailou store, which is the most popular of M99's stores.
