Panmen Scenic Area is the only remaining ancient city gate ruins in Suzhou, and has always had the saying of "looking at the Great Wall in the north and Panmen in the south". As one of the eight ancient city gates in Suzhou, Panmen is an important moat fortress at the intersection of the Grand Canal and the Dalongjiang River. Panmen Scenic Area is located in the southwest corner of the ancient city wall of Suzhou, and the scenic area includes three major scenic spots: water and land city gate (Panmen), Ruiguang Pagoda and Wumen Bridge. Compared to other attractions in the ancient city of Suzhou, Panmen is still a niche, so there are relatively few tourists. In addition, the scenic space is open, and the tour experience is better.
Among the three views of Panmen, the most worth seeing is Panmen. Panmen is composed of water city gate and land city gate, so it is also called water and land city gate, "water and land are half and bending along the intermittent line". The parallel structure of Panmen's water and land city gates is unique in the country. The land city gate of the pan gate has two city gates inside and outside, and the two gates form an urn city in the middle, and in wartime, the enemy can be lured under the city, and the tactics of catching turtles in the urn are adopted. The Water City Gate is adjacent to the Land City Gate, which is the only water and land passage to communicate the inside and outside of the city.
Ruiguang Pagoda was first built in the Three Kingdoms period, built by Wu Lord Sun Quan for the monks of Kangju country, and then built a thirteen-level relics pagoda, but the thirteen-level relics pagoda was destroyed later, and now the Ruiguang Pagoda built on the original site is a building in the Northern Song Dynasty, seven floors and eight sides, is a brick and wood structure, and the attic type relics pagoda. Today, the temple is deserted, and the Ruiguang Pagoda is preserved as a monument. Later, due to the discovery of a number of precious cultural relics in the tower, Ruiguang Pagoda became famous. The national cultural relics in the Suzhou Museum, the pearl relics, are from the Ruiguang Pagoda, in addition to the cultural relics from the Ruiguang Pagoda, there are also "Myoho-renge-kyo", bronze gold-coated pagoda, bronze Buddha statues and so on.
Wumen Bridge is located outside Panmen, across the ancient canal, and was once the only way to enter and exit Panmen by land. The name of Wumen Bridge takes the meaning of "Wuzhong Gateway", the bridge body has been rebuilt several times, and the current Wumen Bridge is built during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, and is built with granite. As the highest existing single-hole ancient stone arch bridge in Jiangsu Province, Wumen Bridge has certain historical value.
