Pingjiang Road Historic District is the most well-preserved and largest historical district in Suzhou, with a history of more than 2,500 years. Pingjiang Road Historic District is adjacent to the Waicheng River in the east, Linton Road in the west, and the Lion Forest and Humble Administrator's Garden, which are must-visit attractions in Suzhou in the north. The block is square, with a number of rivers running through the block, which is a double chessboard pattern of "parallel water and land, adjacent to the river street", and the building is a typical style of pink walls and tiles in the south of the Yangtze River.
The scene of "you go to Gusu to see, and everyone sleeps on the river" is probably difficult to reproduce on Pingjiang Road. Pingjiang Road, which has been driven by tourism, has not escaped the invasion of commercialization, and the main block has been "contracted" by the national unified tourist shops, with the same ethnic style jewelry shops, cake shops, chicken feet shops, and old yogurt shops, which have little to do with the characteristics of Suzhou. Every day after 7 o'clock, the main neighborhood begins to be crowded, especially on holidays. Instead of being squeezed by the "pit" in the main block, it is better to go to the small branch alleys of Pingjiang Road to stroll, such as Hanging Bridge Lane, Niujia Lane, Zhangjia Lane, etc., in these branch alleys, you may still be able to find some tranquility of Jiangnan Water Town.
The Suzhou Opera Museum, located at No. 14 Zhangjia Lane, Pingjiang Road, is a good place to visit. Suzhou Opera Museum, formerly known as the Quanjin Guild Hall, was built by wealthy merchants in Shanxi during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, and was designated as the site of the Suzhou Opera Museum in 1986. The Suzhou Opera Museum itself is a historical ancient building complex, and there is also an ancient stage in the museum that is beautifully built, and the building itself has a certain tourist value. The Suzhou Opera Museum includes two museums, the Kunqu Opera Museum and the Pingtan Museum, which is a professional museum integrating exhibition, collection, research and performance.
The Pingjiang Road Historic District is open for free throughout the day, and the Kunqu Opera Museum and Pingtan Museum in the block are also free to visit. Kunqu Opera Museum has regular Kunqu Opera performances every day, and the performances are paid items, and visitors can purchase tickets on site. The original performance program of the Pingtan Museum has now been moved to the Pingjiang Cultural Center, and performances are arranged on demand.
