Yew Chung International School of Shanghai - Institutional Reviews

Yew Chung International School (YCIS Shanghai) is one of the oldest schools in Greater China, including Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Qingdao and other cities, with Yew Chung International School (YCIS Shanghai) being the oldest school in 1993 and has been serving expatriate families in Shanghai for nearly 30 years.

YCIS Shanghai has a total of five campuses in Pudong and Puxi, including the Regency Park Campus and Century Park Campus in Pudong, the Hongqiao Campus, the Ronghua Campus and the Gubei Campus in Puxi.

YCIS Shanghai is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the Association of International Schools (CIS), and the Center for the Development of Basic Education Curriculum (NCCT) of the Ministry of Education. In addition, the Senior School has been accredited by the Cambridge Examinations Institute (CIE) and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) as a Cambridge International Examinations Centre and IB World School.

The curriculum at YCIS Shanghai is designed to incorporate the English National Curriculum, the IGCSE Curriculum, and the IBDP Curriculum. Before Year 9, students study the English National Curriculum, blending Chinese and Chinese culture, with IGCSE as the core in Years 10 and 11, and IBDP in Years 12 and 13 to prepare for overseas universities.

Art, Music, and Drama are all part of the arts curriculum at YCIS. In terms of fine arts, the school has a special Artist-in-Residence Programme to give students the opportunity to learn from artists and learn about various forms of art. The Violin programme is compulsory for YCIS students in Years 1 to 3 and aims to equip students with an initial grasp of playing the violin, as well as an understanding of music theory and interest in music and instrumental playing. Drama is a core part of the YCIS English curriculum, with students learning the fundamentals of drama from Primary school onwards and participating in drama performances, with three Drama classes per week in the Middle School and free choice of Drama in Senior School.

Teachers at YCIS Shanghai come from over 17 countries and are qualified teachers. More than 50% of teachers have more than 5 years of teaching experience, 18% have a master's degree or higher, and 16% have additional professional qualifications such as special education training, IB training and IGCSE training.

In most international schools, English is the main language of instruction because most of the students are foreigners, and Chinese often plays the role of a second language. Yew Chung Shanghai is an international school that attaches great importance to Chinese, adopting a Chinese and foreign dual principal system, dual class teacher system, and co-management and cooperative teaching in both languages, which is more suitable for the development of many Chinese foreign students.
