Shanghai Concord International School - Institution Reviews

Concordia Education System is the largest private education system in the world, with more than 2,600 schools around the world, most of which are located in the United States. In Chinese mainland, there is only one Concord International School, the Shanghai Concordia International School (CISS).

Founded in 1998 by a team of teachers from international schools in Hong Kong, Concordia International School Shanghai has been running for 20 years. Concordia International School is a church school, fully accredited by the National Lutheran School Commission (NLSA) in 2015, the school is guided by Christianity, students will be exposed to the Christian faith in classrooms and assemblies, and the school will also offer relevant courses to encourage students to study religions around the world and discover their personal beliefs, which needs to be understood by parents in advance.

The school is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is a member of several regional school organization conferences, such as the China-Mongolia International School Organization (ACAMIS), the Asia-Pacific Games (APAC), the East Asian Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS), and the Shanghai International Schools Activities Conference (SISAC).

Nearly half of the students at Concordia International School come from the United States, and the curriculum is close to that of American schools, and the high school adopts the American AP college preparatory system, and more than half of the students go to American colleges and universities for further study after graduation. The World University Exhibition (CWUF) is an annual event at Concordia International School Shanghai, an opportunity for students and parents to interact directly with admissions officers from more than 150 universities around the world. From Preschool to Grade 7, Chinese is one of the compulsory subjects for students, and after Grade 8, students can choose to take Chinese as an elective, in addition to Spanish and Latin.

The school also offers a wide range of co-curricular activities (CCAs), which are equivalent to interest classes in the primary school, which are generally held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and are offered by both the school itself and from external training institutions. The junior high school CCA is dominated by various clubs, such as the Debate Club, the Entrepreneur Club, the Math Club, the Model United Nations, the Fitness Club, the Chess Club, etc. Entering high school, CCA has become more diverse, and high school students can choose to join various clubs, student government, honor society, and campus media.

Concordia International School Shanghai, together with its sister schools, the International School of Hong Kong and the American School of Singapore, is known as the Big Three American International Schools in Asia, and its strength should not be underestimated, and it is not inferior to most of its Shanghai counterparts. In the 2015-2017 college admissions, Concordia International School of Shanghai has achieved remarkable results, winning offers from five Ivy League universities: Harvard University, Brown University, Cornell University, University of Pennsylvania, and Dartmouth College, while California universities are favored by Berkeley and Los Angeles.

Last but not least, parents should be aware that Concordia International School Shanghai is not related to Concordia Bilingual School, although it shares the same school name.
