BWYA International School - Institutional Review

Grades: Kindergarten, Elementary, Junior High School, High School

Chinese students: Yes

Founded in 2001, BWYA International School is a private international school that accepts both international and Chinese students. BWYA's education levels range from kindergarten to high school, and each level is scattered in different campuses, namely Wangjing Campus (IBMYP and IBDP courses), Lido Campus (IN curriculum), and two Laiguangying campuses (junior primary and upper primary schools).

WWYA was founded by professionals in the field of education, the founder Wang Hong is the former vice principal of the International Department of Beijing No. 55 Middle School, once the representative of the International Baccalaureate Organization in the Asia-Pacific region, is the first batch of international education professionals in China, is very experienced in the management of international schools, the school is running well, the teaching results in the past few years are good, and has accumulated a lot of reputation in the parent circle. However, in recent years, WWYA has faced the problem of too much teacher mobility.

In 2009, BWYA was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to teach the IBDP curriculum. BWYA's curriculum is based on the IB system, with IBMYP taught in secondary school (grades 6-10) and IBDP taught in grades 11-12. WWYA did not choose the IBPYP at the primary level, but adopted the IPC (International Primary Years Curriculum). The special IN course is developed by BWYA and American high schools in cooperation, mainly for students whose English proficiency is not too high, using the evaluation criteria of the American credit system, students need to participate in the 2-year IN course, 1 year of the American course, and complete 22 credits together, and students who complete the credits will receive the BWYA graduation certificate and the graduation certificate of the American cooperative high school to apply for American universities. Once a year, IN students have the opportunity to enter the IB program.

Every day after school at 3:30 p.m., it is club time for BWYA students, and there are more than 30 clubs in BWYA, including basketball, cheerleading, 3D printing, book club, dance club, Model United Nations and other clubs. BWYA is a member of the Beijing-Tianjin International Schools Athletic Association (ISAC) and regularly competes with other international schools in basketball, football and volleyball, as well as annual championships in swimming, track and field, table tennis and badminton.

From 2013 to 2017, BWYA's IB pass rate dropped from 92% to 88%, with the highest pass rate of 100% in 2015 and an average score of 35, and then a slight weakness after that, and a pass rate of 89% in 2016 with a maximum score of 42 and an average score of 33, which is higher than the global average of 29.95.

The most criticized by parents is the campus environment and hardware facilities that do not match the high tuition fees. BWYA does not have an independent campus, and the Wangjing Campus shares a campus with Beijing 94 Middle School, which is very inadequate in scale compared to other international schools. In addition to the activity venue, BWYA's classrooms are also relatively old, and some of the desks and chairs are damaged. In terms of air quality, all classrooms at the Wangjing and Lido campuses are equipped with imported air purifiers, and a fresh air filtration system has been installed at the Laiguangying Primary School campus.

Taking the 2017-2018 school year as a reference, the annual tuition fee of the BWYA IBDP program is 200,000 yuan, and the annual tuition price of the IBMYP and IN programs is less than 180,000 yuan, and the tuition fee for the 2018-2019 academic year will rise.
