Houhai is a part of Shichahai, starting from Dianmenwai Street in the east, Xinjiekou Street in the west, Ping'an Street in the south, and North Second Ring Road in the north. The history of Houhai can be traced back to the period of the Yuan Dynasty, when it was the end point of this section of Cao Yun. Houhai has been a prosperous commercial area since ancient times, so there are many large and small traditional buildings and Beijing hutongs in this area, and there are more former residences and scenic spots of celebrities such as Prince Gong's Mansion, Prince Alcohol's Mansion, Song Qingling's Former Residence, and Guo Moruo's Former Residence.
Walking along the edge of Houhai Lake, the lake is open and the vegetation on both sides is dense. Houhai Park on the east coast is not large, but it is the favorite place for Beijing masters to play chess. From time to time, you can see people sweating on the fitness equipment and table tennis table on the road, injecting a touch of life into the calm lake. In winter, the frozen lake becomes a skating rink for Beijingers, and it is no less lively than in spring and summer.
When you come to Houhai, in addition to enjoying the comfort of strolling by the lake, the food is also a part to be well experienced. The most important thing around Houhai is Beijing's local specialty snacks, whether it is on both sides of Houhai or hidden in the cramped alleys next to it, you can hear the greetings of large and small merchants and the noise of diners. The "barbecue season" near Yinding Bridge is a very famous time-honored restaurant, and "Kong Yiji" and "Belly Zhang" are also very popular on holidays.
For many young people, when they mention Houhai, they will think of Houhai Bar Street. There are rows of different types of bars here, but the level of consumption in this area is high, and in recent years, some tourists have reported the phenomenon of ripping off customers here. It is worth mentioning that the southern part of Houhai is connected to the cigarette pouch diagonal street with many small commodity shops, and further east is the famous Nanluoguxiang.
