In 1863, it cost 400,000 francs and was designed by French designers and built by Chinese craftsmen. With a total area of 2,754 square meters and a height of 58.5 meters from the ground to the spire, it is comparable to the world-famous Notre Dame Cathedral in France. It is one of the four all-stone Gothic church buildings in the world (the other three are Notre Dame Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Cologne Cathedral), and it is also one of the most magnificent Gothic buildings with double spires in the country. In 1996, it was announced as a national key cultural relics protection unit, and now it is also a key cultural relics protection unit in Guangdong Province.
Since the church was built entirely of granite, and no granite was produced in Guangzhou, the church used up the hemp stone mined from Ngau Tau Kok and Cha Kwo Ling in Kowloon, Hong Kong at that time. In the process of masonry, it did not use the cement mortar technology that was quite mature in the West at that time, and it still used the traditional Chinese glutinous rice tung oil masonry method, and finally achieved the same effect. The stone chamber does not sit east to west like most churches in Europe, but inherits the pattern of China sitting north and facing south. When you stand in front of the stone chamber, you can feel its solemn and solemn atmosphere.
On its façade, there are a pair of towering double-pointed stone towers, the west side of which houses clocks, and the east side of which originally housed five (now four) bronze bells shipped from France. The tower of the church is a hollow octagonal pyramid with double spires, and the stones are connected by iron rods, and the top of the spire is exquisitely clear. Below the façade tower, there is a 7-metre-diameter rose window with a beautifully carved lattice of glass that fits together seamlessly. These rose windows are made of stained glass such as crimson, navy, purple and yellow inlaid with finely carved stone strips, and the sunlight reflects through the rose windows into the inner hall, which can set off the rich colors of the rich colors. Unfortunately, due to the stone chamber has experienced three catastrophes, the original inlaid on it, imported from France Napoleonic era stained glass has been almost completely destroyed, now we see the glass, are 2004 overhaul specially imported from the Philippines, the glass after high temperature treatment, almost never fade.
In addition, the sides of the church have been given richer elements while maintaining a purely "Gothic" style, including flying buttresses, diagonal braces, interlocking pointed arches, numerous small spires and small minarets that flourish upward, and animal heads arranged in sequence with different expressions. The stone pillars in the church are all bundled pillars formed by eight small columns, supporting a deep space nearly 30 meters high, making the whole church appear more towering and empty.
Compared with the Catholic cathedrals in Europe, the Sacred Heart Cathedral of the Stone Chamber, which has survived three catastrophes, does not have a deep cultural imprint, and there are some high-quality murals and sculptures, but it is still worth visiting for domestic tourists. It should be noted that the Stone Chamber Church is open to the public every morning and afternoon, and during non-Mass hours, visitors can visit as they like, but the interior of the church cannot be photographed, and it is forbidden to enter in shorts and short skirts; Movement around the church is not allowed during the Mass, but non-Catholics are allowed to participate in the Mass.
