Shenzhen Besaith International School - Institutional Reviews

The world's first branch of the nationally renowned BASIS School outside of North America is located in Shekou, Shenzhen, where many foreigners gather. In North America, BASIS schools are considered to be one of the best schools, with several branches ranking among the best high schools, and with its advanced education and academic priority, it has cultivated countless outstanding students, and is the source of students from the world's major universities.

BASIS is located in Wanlian Building, Shekou Wanggu, surrounded by high-tech enterprises and a relatively quiet environment. The construction of BASIS follows the route of "small but beautiful", the whole school is an office building, except for a 300m plastic runway around the building, all other hardware configurations are realized in the office building, including library, indoor gymnasium, small theater, laboratory, dance room, gymnasium, activity room, restaurant, etc. Although the hardware conditions are not luxurious, it can be regarded as a small sparrow, and it has all kinds of organs.

Shenzhen BASIS is a K12 system school, covering the school level from PreK1 to Grade12, extending the school stage from kindergarten to high school, and the school adopts English as the only language of instruction. The school does not have accommodation, students are all day students, students generally have lunch in the school cafeteria, only the nursery department provides a lunch break, and students in other grades basically solve the lunch break problem by themselves.

Ahead and accelerated is BASIS's educational philosophy, both in terms of learning progress and intensity, it is one or two years ahead of American high schools. In Years 1-3, students will study a regular integrated curriculum, as well as a multidisciplinary interdisciplinary curriculum called Connection, each with a different theme and scenario, which students will work through team discussions and collaborations to develop interdisciplinary learning skills and prepare them for Year 5. By 9th grade, students begin taking AP courses, and in general, most students complete all the high school courses they need to graduate in 11th grade. For students who have more than enough time to learn, Year 12 is another step in their studies. At this stage, students begin to study Capstone Courses and work on The Senior Project, which is as difficult as the university curriculum, and students who are able to complete the Capstone and Advanced courses will also perform well in college.

During the teaching process, especially in Years 1-4, students learn with the help of LET (Learning Specialist) and SET (Subject Specialist). LET is equivalent to a class teacher, responsible for tracking and monitoring each student's learning progress, and SET is an expert teacher in a certain subject who has an in-depth understanding of the profession taught, usually a master's or doctoral degree in the major. There is no LET in Grade 5 and Upper Grades.

At BASIS, students are no less stressed than candidates on the college entrance examination track. If you want to give your child a relaxed and happy education, BASIS may not be the best choice because of its strong focus on academic performance, high academic pressure, and frequent exams, which is far from the regular American high school. If a student's grades do not meet the standard, he or she may be asked to retake the course, so assuming that the child's academic ability is not outstanding, the BASIS may cause a huge psychological burden on him.

BASIS focuses primarily on classroom learning, and students also have the opportunity to participate in Field Trips, as well as a variety of extracurricular activities such as concerts, theater festivals, and music festivals. The school has a variety of clubs and societies after school, such as STEM clubs, art clubs, national clubs, sports clubs, instrumental performance clubs, etc.

Since the first batch of students was only admitted in 2015, Shenzhen BASIS has not yet graduated from the first batch, so there are no university admission results for reference. BASIS only admits children of foreigners and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and many parents do not hesitate to let their children naturalize in African countries in order to let their children enter BASIS. Admissions are subject to student and parent interviews, as well as the BASIS Mathematics and English Tests, as well as the WIDA Test. According to 2017 data, BASIS has a 10:1 admissions ratio.
