In 1971, Kryptonite was founded, and in the same year the first U-lock in history was manufactured. The following year, the company's founders took their products to New York City's Second Avenue and locked a three-speed bicycle to a road sign in Greenwich Village, a country known for its high rate of bicycle theft. A month later, all the parts of the bike that could be removed were stolen, leaving only the Kryptonite U-lock and the locked frame. Since then, Kryptonite and its U-locks have made a name for themselves.
Twenty-two years later, under the organization of the New York Post, Kryptonite conducted a similar test again, locking a $600 green Univega road bike at the East Village toll booth in New York, known as the "Bicycle Bermuda". Forty-eight hours later, the bike is still locked on the city's streets, where more than 100,000 bicycles are stolen every year. Kryptonite U-locks have been listed as the best U-locks in the world by internationally renowned newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and Fortune Magazine. In 2001, Kryptonite was acquired by Ingersoll Rand to focus on residential and commercial security due to its continued excellence in security equipment. With the acquisitions of Trelock and Axa, Kryptonite's R&D capabilities have been further strengthened.
Kryptonite divides its products into three grades and distinguishes them by color: golden yellow locks are the top security rating, usually priced between $70 and $100; Orange is premium, usually around $70, and gray has the lowest security rating. Kryptonite's top-of-the-line products are also listed in the list of Sold Secure and ART, the most authoritative lock review agencies in Europe, and many bicycle insurance companies determine the amount of claims based on the security level of Sold Secure. But it's also because Kryptonite U-locks are color-coded that thieves have learned how to quickly lock onto their targets – the color of the U-lock tells which bikes are in their pockets. In industrial design, Kryptonite has achieved remarkable successes: in 1983, the K-4 lock was included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York; In 1988, he won the Art Award of the German Kunstmuseum for the same product, and in the same year, he won the "Good Design" award in Japan.
In addition to the excellent product quality, the biggest feature of Kryptonite is the comprehensive supporting services. In 2004, Kryptonite redesigned the last nine years of the product in a year by replacing 400,000 locks in 21 countries for free, unconditionally and free of charge. As early as 1977, the company launched the "ATPO (Anti-theft Protection Offer)" service, that is, after the bicycle is stolen, the company will give customers different compensation according to the different safety levels of the product, and this service has been imitated by some excellent lock companies. According to the latest official information, if you buy the highest security level of Kryptonite U-lock, the compensation for the loss of the bicycle can be as high as $5,000.
It is very regrettable that although ATPO services have covered 31 countries, China is not currently among them. At the same time, Kryptonite has no official sales channel in China, and consumers can purchase it through daigou or e-commerce platforms.
