CREATED SPECIALIZED IN 1974 WAS A NATURAL EXTENSION OF THE LOVE OF CYCLING. I've been riding on the roads of Northern California with my friends. I realized that a lot of people are passionate about cycling. We all wanted the best products, but it was hard to find at the time. I firmly believe that if a company focuses on the needs of its riders and has a need for the performance advantage that advanced features and technical products bring, they will succeed. IT'S SPECIALIZED'S FOUNDING PRINCIPLE, AND IT REMAINS OUR COMMITMENT TO RIDERS AROUND THE WORLD.
AFTER GRADUATING FROM SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY, I SOLD MY OLD WHITE VOLKSWAGEN AND WENT ON A BIKE TOUR AROUND EUROPE. BY CHANCE, I MET ONE OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN CYCLING, CINO CINELLI, AND HE AGREED TO LET ME, A COLLEGE GRADUATE WHO DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A CAR, IMPORT HIS PARTS TO THE UNITED STATES. I SPENT MY LAST $1,500 ON ALL THE CINELLI PARTS I COULD BUY, WENT BACK TO THE UNITED STATES, AND STARTED SPECIALIZED.
