McDonald's Corporation had total revenues of $23.5 billion and net profits of $4.3 billion in 2008.

Most McDonald's fast food restaurants offer drive-through, a fast food service that can be reached without getting out of the car. Customers can drive to order at the door and bypass the restaurant to pick up their food at the exit. Both types of service are available, with indoor dining and sometimes outdoor seating.

Drive-thru restaurants usually have several separate stops: a parking spot, a checkout point, and a pickup point, and the latter two stops are usually combined.

In some areas, the main highway is lined with McDrive, a counter-no-seat avenue for night tour drivers, which is often used as a simplified way to run a drive-thru in high-density areas of downtown areas.

Some dedicated themed restaurants still remain, such as the Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's '50s-themed restaurant, as well as a hand-picked McDonald's restaurant located in the suburbs and in some cities' large indoor or outdoor playgrounds. Known as McDonald's PlayPlace (formerly PlayLand), this type of restaurant first appeared in the United States in the '70s and '80s, and came a little later internationally: much of Canada, for example, didn't appear until the mid-'90s.

Each year, McDonald's devotes a portion of its turnover to charity. Founder Ray Klok used his entire fortune to set up the Ronald McDonald Charitable Foundation when he died.

Since McDonald's regularly sells carbonated beverages provided by Coca-Cola, McDonald's has actually formed a strategic alliance with Coca-Cola.

McDonald's is a Fortune 500 company. In Fortune's latest poll, McDonald's ranked 16th on the "World's Most Admired Companies" and topped seven different food service industry rankings. In the 2009 BusinessWeek World's Best Brands, McDonald's was ranked 6th.
