On January 1, 1884, the founder of Victorinox Karl Victorinox was born. Mr. Karl Elsener opened his knife workshop in the town of Ibach in the Swiss canton of Schwyz.

In 1891, Carl. Mr. Elsena began the work of founding the Association of Swiss Master Cutlers, with the aim of uniting all Swiss cutlers to do what individual craftsmen could not do – to produce "bagged" knives for the Swiss military.

On June 12, 1897, Elsena registered the designs of the Officers' Knife and the Sports Knife that brought him wealth. This is the authentic Swiss Army Knife that has since been widely recited around the world.

In 1909, his mother died, and in honor of her, Elsena trademarked her name – Victoria – for her products.

In 1909, the same year, the Swiss government allowed Elsena to print all of its knives with the Swiss mark, a cross and shield embedded in the face of a red fibre handle. It has been used for more than 120 years.

In 1921, as the technology for the production of stainless steel matured, Victorinox began to produce knives from this new material, adding the French Inoxydable (meaning non-rusty) to the company's logo, which was later abbreviated to Inoxyd, and finally the company's name VICTORINOX.

In 1931, a wing was added to the forge to serve as the world's first fully electrified steel hardening workshop.

Between 1945 and 1949, a large number of sabers were sold to the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force through the stores of the U.S. Military Academy, and the Swiss Army Knife became famous around the world. U.S. officers and soldiers refer to Swiss officer knives simply as "Swiss Army Knives." Today, the name is synonymous with multi-purpose "bag" knives.

In 1984, the company doubled its factory and office space. The 810 employees generate an annual profit of more than 80 million Swiss francs.

In 1989, Victorinox entered the American watch industry under the trademark SABI.

In 1992, the company opened its own sales subsidiary in Japan. This was followed by the opening of more branches.

In 1999, Victorinox entered the luggage market by granting a license to the American TRG Group in St. Louis.

In 1999 the company expanded its watchmaking industry with the opening of Victorinox Watch SA in Bonfol, Jura, the base of the Swiss watch industry.

In 2000, the Victorinox Foundation was founded, with Victorinox AG owning 75% and the Carl and Elise Elsener-Gut Charitable Foundation owning the other 15%.

In 2006, Victorinox Watch SA moved from Bonfol to a factory with new watchmaking equipment: Porrentruy, Jura.

In 2007, Victorinox founded Victorinox Swiss Army Perfume GmbH at its headquarters.
