Founded in September 2000 and approved by the Ministry of Education, Hankou University is a multidisciplinary and comprehensive undergraduate university. It was formerly known as Central China Normal University Hankou Branch. In 2011, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the university became one of the first 17 schools in the country to be converted from an independent college to an ordinary undergraduate university. In 2014, the school took the lead in entering the second enrollment among similar colleges and universities in the province. It has been approved to jointly recruit and train graduate students with Central China Normal University and Wuhan University of Science and Technology.

At present, the school is actively preparing to build the German Industrial Park of Hankou University, with a planned land area of 4,000 acres, with the University of Applied Sciences Zone, the High-tech Enterprise Zone, the Science and Technology Achievement Incubation Zone, and the Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Service Zone (German Town) as the main construction contents. The university has hired Peter Sahson, academician of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering and professor of the University of Oxford, as the vice president of the school and the director of the International Innovation Center, who is specifically responsible for the introduction of industrial park projects and the establishment of a first-class high-tech research center in China.

After more than ten years of development, the university has formed a complete higher education system for cultivating master's students, undergraduates, and junior college students, as well as holding post-secondary education, continuing education, vocational education, international cooperation and exchanges, etc., and at the same time, the enrollment rate, employment rate, and internationalization degree are in a leading position among similar universities. The school has the right to evaluate intermediate professional titles and confer bachelor's degrees. The school has ranked more than 10 similar colleges and universities in the country for five consecutive years. The international code of the school is 11800 and the code of Hubei Province is 1307.

The school is located in the south of Wuhan City, Hubei Province, on the shore of Tangxun Lake, covering an area of more than 1,000 acres and a construction area of 300,000 square meters. The total land acquisition area of the second phase of the school is 172906 square meters. The campus environment is functional, well-laid out and tasteful. The school is making every effort to build a "livable campus", and the student apartments have basically achieved full coverage of air conditioning, telephone, washing machine, and hot water. The school has teaching instruments and equipment with a total value of more than 50 million yuan, more than 70 professional laboratories, and more than 1,850 experimental projects, with an experimental rate of more than 95%. The school library has a construction area of 26,800 square meters, with a collection of more than 1.2 million books, more than 1,600 kinds of periodicals, 5,200 GB of electronic books, and the introduction of multiple databases such as CNKI and Reading Show Academic Search. There are 70 fixed internship bases for students, and the internship practice of students is good.

The school has 14 colleges, including the School of Management, the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Economics, the School of Finance, the School of Foreign Chinese, the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the School of Computer Science and Technology, the School of Music, the School of Media, the School of Art and Design, the School of International Exchange, the School of Vocational Education, and the School of Continuing Education. The school has a team of full-time teachers with rich teaching experience, high academic level, and reasonable professional titles, academic qualifications and age structure. At present, there are more than 600 full-time teachers, including 1 academician, more than 70 full professors, more than 190 associate professors, and about 68% of the full-time teachers have master's and doctoral degrees, and 5 professors enjoy special allowances from the State Council. A group of academicians such as Ning Jinsheng, Daniel Zhang, Zhang Shourong, He Yanxian and other national-level famous teachers, as well as famous teachers from key universities such as University of Science and Technology of China, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Central China Normal University, etc., were appointed as distinguished professors of our university.

The university's scientific research achievements have been significantly improved. The proportion of teachers participating in scientific research in the school has reached 94.7%, and the teachers have published academic monographs, published papers, and undertaken scientific research projects, all of which are in the forefront of similar universities in the province. In 2013, the "Hubei Provincial Process Control and Advanced Equipment Manufacturing Collaborative Innovation Center (Cultivation)" settled in our university, which consists of four research institutes, including "Environmental Engineering Technology and Equipment Research Institute", "Wind and Solar Complementary Power Generation New Technology and Equipment Manufacturing Research Institute", "Power-saving New Technology and Equipment Manufacturing Research Institute", and "Intelligent Opto-mechanical Technology Research Institute", which have obtained 6 patents, and some research results have passed the appraisal hosted by the Provincial Science and Technology Department. The school's entrepreneurship education is at the leading level in the country. The school has a strong entrepreneurial atmosphere and is known as the "entrepreneurial talent training base". In November 2011, the first entrepreneurship education college in Hubei University was established, which has cultivated many outstanding entrepreneurial models such as Ai Houyu and Yang Cheng, and many alumni have started companies with assets of tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of yuan. In 2015, the School of Entrepreneurship Education and nearly 100 enterprises and universities jointly initiated the establishment of the Wuhan Young Entrepreneurs Entrepreneurship Chamber of Commerce to build a platform for young entrepreneurs to develop and exchange services. The school has set up a Brilliance College Student Entrepreneurship Incubator to provide professional guidance and services for entrepreneurial college students, plans to incubate 30 companies every year, help 10% of graduates find employment, support 5-10 companies to obtain venture capital and angel capital investment within three years, and support 1-2 technology-based medium-sized enterprises within five years.
