Xi'an Institute of Translation and Interpretation was founded by Mr. Ding Zuyi, an outstanding contemporary educator and pioneer of private education in China. The school is located at the foot of the beautiful Zhongnan Mountain in the southern suburbs of Xi'an, and its predecessor was the Xi'an Translation Training Institute, which was founded in 1987. In 2000, with the approval of the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government, Xi'an Vocational College of Translation and Interpretation was established to implement full-time higher vocational education. In 2005, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was upgraded to an undergraduate university and renamed Xi'an Institute of Translation and Interpreting. In 2009, it was granted the right to confer bachelor's degrees. In 2013, it successfully passed the qualification assessment of undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education. In 2014, it was inspected and diagnosed by Shaanxi Province's "one school, one policy", and in the same year, it was identified by the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education as the first batch of application-oriented transformation pilot universities.

The school has always adhered to the school-running philosophy of "education-oriented, moral education first, ability-oriented, all-round development", "teacher-oriented, student-oriented". The university consists of 11 secondary colleges, including the School of Asian and European Languages, the School of English, the School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Engineering and Technology, the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Arts, the School of Health, the School of Translation and Training, the School of Continuing Education and the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Department of Ideological and Political Education and the Department of Physical Education, the Department of Public Art Education, and the Department of National Defense Education. The college offers 36 undergraduate majors and 24 junior college majors, covering eight disciplines, including literature, economics, management, engineering, art, law, education, and medicine.

The school has always adhered to the socialist direction of running a school, supported by the spirit of Western translation, based on cultural education, actively promoting the core values of socialism, and striving to carry out the construction of campus culture. Relying on the Zhongnan Society, the school holds the Zhongnan Lecture Hall, establishes academic journals such as the Journal of Xi'an Institute of Translation and Interpretation and the Study of Shaanxi Zhongnan Culture, and edits and publishes a series of books such as the Western Translation Series and the Zhongnan Library. The school adheres to the three-in-one education model of "knowledge, ability and quality". Spring and autumn poetry meetings, "Humanities World" literary and artistic performances, Mid-Autumn Festival parties, New Year's Day parties, etc. are held regularly. 50 student clubs have carried out a variety of campus cultural activities, strengthened the construction of the second classroom, and comprehensively improved the overall quality of students. It has established cooperative relations with universities in the province such as Northwest University, Xi'an Institute of Communication of the People's Liberation Army, Yan'an University, etc., and has established exchanges and cooperative relations with more than a dozen foreign universities such as Fraser Valley University in Canada, University of San Jose in the United States, and Fuzhou University of Foreign Chinese in Japan. In recent years, more than 1,000 people have gone abroad to study for master's degrees; There are 18 teachers and students who have gone to Eastern Europe and Australia as visiting scholars and studying abroad on national assignment.
