Founded in 1835, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University) is the oldest western medicine hospital in China, with a history of 179 years. The great revolutionary pioneer Dr. Sun Yat-sen once studied medicine here and engaged in the revolutionary movement under the name of "Yat-sen". Over the past century, the hospital has developed into a large-scale comprehensive tertiary first-class hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and preventive health care.

The hospital has repeatedly created countless firsts in the history of Western medicine in the motherland, such as: the first case of eye disease surgery, oophorectomy, bladder stone removal, ether anesthesia, pathological anatomy, the first X-ray, the first Chinese medical journal, the first Western medicine school, the first Chinese medical student, the first "Nightingale", etc. After the liberation, a number of famous medical scientists and medical educators in the country, such as Lin Shumo, Chen Yaozhen, Xie Zhiguang, Zhong Shifan, Qin Guangyu, Chen Xintao, Zhou Shoukai, Mao Wenwen, Chen Guozhen, etc., devoted themselves to this place, cultivating a large number of medical talents, making it the cradle of Western medicine in the motherland, the birthplace of the medical department of Sun Yat-sen University, and making great contributions to the medical cause of Guangdong and even the whole country.
