Renji Hospital, affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was founded in 1844 as the first Western medicine hospital in Shanghai. Over the past 166 years since its establishment, the scale of the hospital has been expanding, especially in the more than 50 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the hospital has developed rapidly, and has now become a large-scale comprehensive tertiary first-class hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching and scientific research. It has a number of key disciplines, key laboratories and clinical medical centers. The hospital is now composed of two parts, the west is located in the central business district of Huangpu District, Shanghai, adjacent to the Bund; The eastern part is located in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone of Pudong.

Renji Hospital, affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was founded in 1844

In October 1999, the East Campus of Renji Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was completed and put into use.

In 2005, the Surgical Building of Renji East Hospital was completed and put into use.

In 2008, the cadre health complex was completed and put into use.

In December 2008, the third phase of Renji Hospital's Xinmen Emergency Medical Technology Complex broke ground as a major practical project of the Shanghai Municipal Government.

In October 2010, the Institute of Oncology and Renji Hospital were "integrated into one institution".

In February 2011, the comprehensive renovation project of Renji West Hospital was officially launched. In July 2013, the renovation of the inpatient building was completed and successfully put into use. It is currently in the renovation stage of the outpatient building and is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

In November 2012, the new emergency building of Yan Chai East Hospital was completed

On December 12, 2012, Renji Hospital South Campus (hereinafter referred to as "Renji South Hospital") affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was fully opened

In July 2013, the North Campus of Renji Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was fully opened.
