Beihai Kindergarten, formerly known as the Beiping Social Bureau Nursery School, was taken over by the Beijing Military Control Commission of the Chinese People's Liberation Army in 1949 and became an experimental nursery school specializing in fostering the children of revolutionary cadres and revolutionary soldiers. In the same year, it moved into the silkworm altar near the back gate of Beihai Park and was renamed Beihai Kindergarten. Beihai Kindergarten has won a number of honorary titles, including Beijing first-class kindergarten, Beijing model kindergarten, Beijing preschool education demonstration base, Beijing advanced kindergarten for basic education and scientific research, Beijing community early childhood education demonstration base, Beijing excellent key foreign visiting units, etc. It was not until 2016 that Beihai Kindergarten was open to the public.

Beihai Kindergarten now has three sites in one park, namely Dixi Branch (Headquarters), Houhai Branch, and Baimi Branch, with a total of 28 teaching classes and more than 800 children in the kindergarten. The Houhai branch and the Baimi branch are both small class departments. The headquarters of Beihai Kindergarten is a garden-style kindergarten, located in the first silkworm altar, with a unique natural environment. The Silkworm Altar is one of the nine altars and eight temples in Beijing, located in the royal garden, and was once the place where the concubines of the Qing Dynasty emperors worshipped the silkworm gods. The area covers an area of about 17,000 square meters, and Beihai Kindergarten occupies more than half of the area, which is not open to the public. The layout and design of the garden house was designed by Liang Sicheng's assistant Zhang Changling, surrounded by red walls, green trees in the park, and white towers. The site of Houhai's small class garden is also not small, occupying the Houhai Dazang Longhua Temple. This Tibetan Longhua Temple was built in the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty Daoguang was renamed "Xinhua Temple", and was later incorporated into the alcohol prince's mansion by the regent Zaifeng, became a family temple, and is now a cultural relics protection unit in Xicheng District.

Beihai Kindergarten pays attention to absorbing and learning from different educational concepts and models at home and abroad, and in 1994 it introduced Orff music education and successfully localized it, and also drew on Montessori, Reggio Emilia and other educational concepts to advocate the use of games to guide children. At the same time, the kindergarten also offers English, computer, Go, roller skating, martial arts, swimming and other courses, which are included in the childcare fee, and children can choose talent courses according to their own interests and hobbies. Beihai Kindergarten has a wide range of activities, often cooperating with social and cultural institutions to hold large-scale activities, involving traditional culture, life skills, poetry appreciation, opera performances, etc. In addition, the kindergarten often receives domestic and foreign heads of state and dignitaries, etc., and children need to prepare performances from time to time.

In the past, the students of Beihai Kindergarten were mainly children of the central government and ministries and commissions, and it was not until 2016 that it recruited students from the society, with a quota of about 100 people, which also opened a door for the children of ordinary families. However, parents do not have to worry about the so-called "comparison" wind, through the social recruitment of parents to Beihai kindergarten evaluation is very high, even if it is an ordinary family study, children can also feel the sense of equal treatment, every staff treat children with enthusiasm and careful.

Even if there are many advantages, it is more difficult for ordinary families to enroll in Beihai kindergarten than to enter a kindergarten. The enrollment principle of Beihai Kindergarten is the principle of household registration, real estate and nearby priority in Xicheng District, but the expression is not as clear as that of Beijing No. 1 Kindergarten. Ordinary families can hardly enter the small class of the headquarters, if they belong to the community near the Houhai branch and the Baimi branch, and are in the two alleys of the kindergarten, there is still a chance of success. In terms of the development situation of kindergartens in Beijing, public kindergartens will hardly have to expand their enrollment, and the future is more to support inclusive private kindergartens, so it is the norm to be unable to enroll in Beihai kindergartens, and parents do not need to be too entangled.
