Founded in 1996, Shiwai Middle School is one of the first bilingual demonstration schools in Shanghai and a joint school of UNESCO Teachers' Chairs.

In 2005, the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to offer the Middle School Programme (IB-MYP). Four years later, the School was able to offer the International Diploma Programme (IBDP) and became an IB member school. Shiwai Middle School has two teaching sites, the main campus is located at No. 602 Hongcao South Road, and the international campus is located at No. 400 Baihua Street.

The IB Curriculum Department is the main channel for foreign students to apply to overseas universities, including the IBMYP program in junior high school and the IBDP program in high school, both of which do not require students' nationality. The IBDP curriculum has been localized and renamed the International Integrated Curriculum Senior Secondary Programme (IIC-DP), which not only covers the high academic requirements of the IBDP curriculum, but also blends the characteristics of the Chinese curriculum. English is the main medium of instruction, except for Chinese courses, all other courses are taught in English using the original English textbooks.

Starting from junior high school, the school will organize students to go to Hangzhou, Qiandao Lake, Nanjing, Beijing and other places to carry out projects, and enter high school, students also need to go to Guizhou, Dabie Mountain, Hunan and other remote mountainous areas to teach to maintain the consistency of practical activities, these experiences are very beneficial to students' university applications.

There are more than 410 students and more than 100 teachers in grades 10-12 of the IBDP High School, including 30 foreign teachers, mainly with master's degrees and a small number of doctors.

We encourage students to participate in subject competitions, and our students have achieved excellent results in various English debate, mathematical modeling, business, physics, chemistry, and biology competitions at home and abroad. In the IBDP World Examination, the average score of the class of 2015 reached 38.9, the class of 2016 reached 38.4 points, and the class of 2017 reached 38.6 points, which is 8-9 points higher than the global average score (IBDP global average score of 30 points) for three consecutive years.

In 2018, 50% of the world's foreign language graduates received admission letters from the top 30 universities in the United States, such as the University of Chicago, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University, Cornell University, etc., and the California Department received a total of 20 offers from Berkeley and Los Angeles, and all students were admitted to the top 80 universities in the United States.
