Xujiahui Catholic Church - Institutional Review

Also known as the Bishop of Inatius, it broke ground in 1904 and is the earliest Gothic church in China. It is worth mentioning that the church was designed by the British architect W.M. Dowdall, and the construction process was also fully responsible for the French Shanghai Architectural Company, which made the architectural style more Western-style, rather than mixing Chinese architectural elements like the Sacred Heart Church in Guangzhou and the Xishiku Church in Beijing.

The church has five floors, the exterior walls are made of red brick, and the corners of the base are made of bluestone, which is unusually grand. The two bell towers are 60 meters high, once the tallest buildings in Shanghai, and the spires are paved with pale gray flake stone tiles, which is a typical Gothic style building that is very rare in China. If you look closely, it is not difficult to find that there is a leaning-like stone beast on the top buttress of the church, which is the drainage system of the church, but it has been unable to play its original role due to disrepair.

The church is about 80 meters long and has 1,000 seats and can accommodate 3,000 people. There are 64 stone pillars in the lobby, and each stone pillar is composed of 10 small columns of gold mountain stone, which is magnificent. In addition, the lead stained glass and rose windows are also highlights, and the structure of the main gable window and the side window of the transept is not the same, either radial or wheel-shaped, and the style is different.

There are not many sculptures and murals in Xujiahui Catholic Church, the main attraction is still in the building itself, and to this day, there are still many tourists who are shocked by its grandeur. People in the film and television industry also recognize the architecture, and the church has been photographed in Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun", and has often appeared in TV series such as "Old House is Happy" and "Fate I Love You".
