Founded in 2000, Material Life Book Bar, named after Duras's essay collection "Material Life", is a multi-functional place integrating bookstores, bars and cafes, and has won the 2010 Southern Reading Festival The Most Influential Humanities Bookstore in the Chinese-speaking World.
Material life is at a fork in the road, like a meeting point between people and choices, full of metaphors. The glass wall facing the fork in the road is a highlight of material life, and its screen-like design makes the bookstore as transparent as a window, with an unobstructed view of the overall layout, and sunlight pouring into every corner of the bookstore.
The space of material life is divided into two parts. The bookstore occupies about one-third of the area, like a book corridor running east-west, with a length of about 20 meters and a width of about 4 meters. The books seem to be arranged in a chaotic manner, and when you enter the door, you will see a column of fashion magazines on the right, followed by a row of bookcases, and the first grid is a series of Chinese translations of masterpieces and literary works from top to bottom.
Not far from the entrance, there is a pile of five-fold books, mixed with old and new, classic bestsellers. In general, the selection of books on material life is mainly in the humanities and social sciences, and there is no shortage of various in-depth historiographical books, such as "The Collapse of the Celestial Empire", "The Sea and Civilization", "State and Construction: State Governance and World Order in the 21st Century", etc., which are of excellent taste, but I don't know how many people will open them. The bookstore is small in size, but it still has 10 seats for sitting. The red single sofa next to the bookshelf and the sunlight at your fingertips make for an ideal reading environment.
The bar occupies two-thirds of the area and can accommodate nearly 100 people, which is a quiet and tranquil place for ordering a drink, sitting down to work, reading a book or chatting. As the activity area of the book bar, the bar can also hold a variety of cultural salons, lectures and exhibitions, such as Long Yingtai, Bai Xianyong, Xu Anhua, Zhang Wuchang and other literati and scholars have been guests here, which makes the material life book bar a lot more humanistic atmosphere.
It should be noted that the bookstore is near the Shenzhen Foreign Chinese School, so there are many students who come to the bookstore at noon, they come here to eat, do homework, or chat and play games, so it is noisy at noon. Readers who want to come to the book bar to read a book in silence should avoid this time.
