Foreigner's House, known as the first second-hand bookstore in Shenzhen to deal in used books, the first to hold book clubs, and the largest number of foreign books, has been open for more than 20 years, with a total of more than 300,000 used books traded. In 2016, Waiwai Home won the "Shenzhen Small and Medium-sized Bookstore Ivy Award" for its persistence for many years.
The development of the Alien House has witnessed the rise and fall of the second-hand book market - it had four stores at its peak, and one store had 50 readers at the same time to bury their heads in the book, and with the decline of the second-hand book market and the dilemma of business, the Alien House is now much worse than in the past, and there is only one store left, part of which is also rented out to become a lottery shop, and it is rare to see 10 readers in the store shopping for books at the same time.
The plight can be seen in the poor in-store environment: psoriasis advertisements and phone numbers have taken over the store's roller shutters, and there is little literary or fresh decoration in the store. The space is cramped, and the slightly sloping bookshelves are stacked with all kinds of old books, and the smell of cloudy old books comes to the nose. The staircase leading to the attic swayed with footsteps, and it felt like it was in danger of collapsing at any moment. The classification of books is also very confusing, probably due to lack of manpower and energy, and if you want to find a specific book, there seems to be no more effective way than to ask the boss to help.
Foreign books are one of the characteristics of the foreign house, accounting for about one-fifth of the bookstore's inventory, mainly hidden in the attic, some scattered on the first floor and in the narrow corridors, covering English, Japanese, German, French and many other languages, a considerable part of which are fairy tale books.
In general, the Alien House is a gradually forgotten bookstore, with fewer people coming to the store to buy lottery tickets than to buy books. However, for readers who like to buy used books, an exotic home may be what a used bookstore should look like, and perhaps when you gently brush off the dust on the old books, the long-loved out-of-print books will come into view and become the biggest surprise.
At present, the Alien House has also made some changes, such as moving online, and Confucius's second-hand book network and Taobao have become new sales channels for the Alien House. In addition, the bookstore also provides purchasing services, and some readers can also ask foreign families to find and order used books on their behalf if they need them.
