Officially opened to the public in 1988, the Fairy Lake Botanical Garden was rated as a 4A-level scenic spot by the National Tourism Administration in 2007, with an average annual visitor volume of nearly 2 million in recent years. It is located in the northwest foothills of Wutong Mountain, the highest peak in Shenzhen, and borders the Shenzhen Reservoir in the west. It is selected and planned by Professor Sun Xiaoxiang of Beijing Forestry University, a well-known garden design expert, and is named "Fairy Lake" because of its mountains and rivers and full of aura.
Starting from the main entrance of Fairy Lake (Fairy Lake Plaza), there is a rich variety of scenery to enjoy along the way. But the most concentrated place is the various garden landscapes, pavilions and botanical gardens centered on the fairy lake. At present, the Fairy Lake Botanical Garden has nearly 80 scenic spots, pavilions and special gardens, as well as several popular science exhibition halls. Scenic spots that are well worth visiting include "Heaven and Earth" and "Fossil Forest". Heaven and Earth...... It's not the one you think, it includes Magnolia Garden, Yinsheng Garden, Butterfly Valley Orchid, Alder Lake and Tianchi, which is a must-visit place for tourists, with perfect facilities, rest and popular science complement each other. The fossil forest is the world's largest ex-situ conservation and display of petrified wood. The so-called petrified wood means that after hundreds of millions of years ago trees were quickly buried underground, the organic matter in the wood was replaced by silica in the groundwater, but its wood structure and texture remained unchanged. The petrified wood preserved in the fossil forest is polished to be smooth and magnificent, like a tree-shaped sculpture carved from agate, standing one by one in the Gobi Desert and oasis, which is very visually stunning.
If you're a plant lover, Fairy Lake is a treasure trove of plants to feast your eyes on. It conserves nearly 12,000 species, among which its cycad garden is quite distinctive, with more than 240 species collected, making it one of the botanical gardens with the largest number of cycads in the world. During the period, the cycads are graceful and colorful, and the shapes are different. Immersing yourself in this kind of plant that flourished in the Jurassic dinosaur era, you will feel like you have traveled back in time from time to time.
The entire botanical garden covers an area of 546 hectares and consists of mountains, hills, and water bodies. The roads in the park are all winding roads, which are not difficult to walk, but with twists and turns, ups and downs, it is not easy to walk through the whole park in one day. Therefore, it is recommended to buy a scenic bus ticket on the right hand side of the entrance, 3 yuan/person.
