As the world's most well-known pigment manufacturer, Windsor Newton's oil paints have never been absent from the evaluation, but compared with the most popular watercolor, the performance of oil paints is not outstanding. Windsor Newton opened a joint venture factory in China with a 90% shareholding ratio, Tianjin Keya, which produced the most widely spread oil paints for painters, and lowered the average score with artist-level oil paints, and now oil paints can only be based on cost performance in the eyes of professional painters.
Windsor Newton's high profile stems from its long history dating back to 1832 and the global expansion strategy of the consortium behind it. It changed hands several times, last being acquired in 1990 by AB Wilhelm Becker, a well-known Swedish pigment conglomerate. In 2011, the group completely closed the Windsor Newton factory in London, completely transferred production to France, supplied artist pigments to the world, and opened a joint venture factory in China to cover the low-price market.
Windsor Newton's artist-grade oil paints use the most classic formula, using linseed oil or safflower oil as the medium, and have passed the AP safety certification in the United States. In addition to the low concentration of pigments, the overall performance of artist-grade oil paints is good from the data, the total color number has shrunk from 119 colors to the current 115 colors, of which 80 colors are made of a single pigment. Only Alizarin Crimson Azarin Crimson was rated as medium durable, while the rest of the shades had excellent durability.
However, due to his prowess, Windsor Newton was able to use most of the high-grade pigments used in oil paints as transparent pigments, with only 29 colors of translucent and opaque colors in total, much less than Daniel Smith. This means that Windsor Newton does not have enough shades to use for the underlying color, and there are almost no blue and purple shades.
Thanks to Windsor Newton's global sales network, all shades of French artist-grade oil paints imported from France can also be purchased in China, with prices ranging from 45 to 150 yuan due to their low concentration, and the most expensive shades include some cobalt colors and natural rose red, which is exclusive to Windsor Newton.
Under the artist-grade oil paint, there are WINTON oil paints, a total of 47 colors, almost all of which are made of synthetic pigment mixing, which has no advantages except for all durability, and has not entered China. The painter's special oil paint pigment produced by Tianjin Keya is of low quality, and the tinting strength is weaker than that of the artist, so color mixing is not recommended. However, the grinding and durability performance is good, and it is sold for 4.6-6 yuan, which is very cost-effective for daily practice.
