Founded in 1887 by Frank Smythson, Smythson began to produce stationery products and was known as the "Hermes of the stationery industry". Smythson's design of the first thin diary to carry around in 1908 became a first for the time, and was sought after by celebrities such as Charles Dickens and Churchill.
