Hakoya's parent company, Tatsumiya, was founded in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, the birthplace of Yamanaka lacquerware, and is now a member of the Yamanaka Lacquerware Federation. With the introduction of plastic lacquerware-making technology, Yamanaka's lacquerware production jumped to the top in Japan, and Tatsumiya also began to use this technique. In 1990, Tatsumiya took over the Hakoya business and began to produce bento boxes, which gradually became a well-known bento box brand and achieved high sales at Rakuten Malls in Japan.
 
Even compared with Japanese brands such as Asvel and Skater, Hakoya's bento boxes can be called the most Japanese-style, with plastic as the base, lacquer coating, color painting and other production techniques, and the use of kimono fabrics, cherry blossoms, beckoning cats, indigo dyeing, garden patterns and many other Japanese aesthetic elements, beautiful but not gaudy. Despite their distinctive appearance, Hakoya's bento boxes are made of PET, ABS, and a blend of PET and ABS, and although some products are labeled as microwave-safe, they are not recommended for microwave heating.
