Founded in 1979, Sadowsky has grown from a guitar repair shop in New York to one of the most professional handmade guitar and bass brands in the world today. Thanks to its quality, the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, Grammy Award-winning modern jazz ace producer Marcus Miller, and former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted have all become loyal users of the Sadowsky brand.
Founder Roger Sadowsky was a repairer who was skilled at modding musical instruments, and in his early career, he redesigned Marcus Miller's 60's Fender Jazz Bass, installing preamps, shielding electronics, and upgraded bridges, which eventually became a highly personalized Sadowsky Mod. Later, he also brought the concept of acoustic guitar to the production of electric basses, creating a lightweight acoustic resonator and perfect noise reduction technology, with a clean, clear tone that is superior to other similar products on the market.
The most distinctive feature of the Sadowsky product is its preamplifier, which can freely switch between active and passive circuitry through a mini switch, and can be adjusted by 5 levels of hand-wound custom pickups to achieve the effect of timbre gain. In the normal bolt joint, once the screws are unscrewed, the neck and body are separated. Sadowsky's superb bolting technique allows the neck to be removed even if the neck is held in the air and left to hang in the air.
Sadowsky has always adhered to the concept of pure handcraft, the wood and veneer are carefully selected and polished, and the fretboard and strings of each instrument are controlled at the optimal distance to achieve a good feel and resonance. At present, it has opened three product lines: Metroline Basses, NYC Basses, and MetroExpress Basses, and Beijing Spinning Seven Days Musical Instrument is the only authorized dealer of Sadowsky in China.
The NYC Basses line is custom-made in the United States, and in addition to the traditional lineup, which includes the standard, Will Lee, and Single Cut five-string models, there is also a new Satin line, which is priced between $2,900 and $5,700. If you want to make an electric bass go for personality, you can also choose the right pickup configuration, the wood of the bass structure, and the color of the finish in the optional menu. For each additional option, there is a minimum starting price of $200.
The traditional NYC series is mainly made of swamp wood or alder wood, which is lighter to use and has a stronger resonance. The fretboard is maple or mahogany, with a choice of single coil or J-pickups, with classic preamps and bypass switches for a more detailed and compact treble and bass performance. The Satin series features ash or alder bodies, morado or maple fingerboards, graphite strips on the necks for added stability, solid and satin finishes, and Verdine White signature and Deluxe models with a modern tone.
The Metroline Basses product line is made in Japan, and NYC's representative models are produced in a standardized process, and the price is relatively affordable, about $3,000. The hardware is made of chrome-plated Hipshot authorized tuners, original Sadowsky pickups and preamps, and the sound quality is guaranteed. Compared to the American NYC Basses, the body weight is slightly heavier, and there is no option for custom services such as veneers, wood materials, and body weight reduction holes. This product line is more suitable for musicians who like NYC custom styles, but are not on a budget.
MetroExpress Basses, developed by Roger Sadowsky and his Japanese apprentice Yoshi, in collaboration with one of Japan's top factories, weighs less than 8.9 pounds and is known as the "lightweight Sadowsky electric bass." The electronic components and wood are roughly similar to those of the Metroline Basses, and the body material is replaced with swamp ash wood for solid alder, and the finish is available in six color options, including black, ice blue, and turquoise, and is priced at the lowest price of the entire production line, at $1,875 for the 4-string version and $1,975 for the 5-string version.
It is worth noting that there are four theories about the Sadowsky brand in the market, namely Sadowsky NYC, Sadowsky TYO, Sadowsky Tokyo and Sadowsky Guitar. Among them, Sadowsky NYC is a product that Roger Sadowsky personally participated in; The Sadowsky Guitar is produced in Japan, which is slightly lower than that produced in the United States, and the color options are limited; The Sadowsky TYO refers to Nissan's Custom Shop, which is only available in Japan. The Sadowsky Tokyo was founded in 1996 by Roger Sadowsky's Japanese apprentice, Yoshi Kikuchi, and its main products are the Metroline Basses series.
