Canon is the undisputed image hegemon, having been the No. 1 seller in the interchangeable-lens camera market for fifteen consecutive years, thanks to its dominance in the field of SLR cameras. Photographers holding white cannon barrels outside the stadium, reporters running with red-circled lenses on the road, and tourists with EOS lanyards on their shoulders in the scenic area all speak of Canon's position as the king of the camera field.
In the field of mirrorless cameras, Canon is relatively conservative, and the models launched are mainstream consumer products for the mass market, which is far from its professional models in the DSLR field. It wasn't until the fall of 2018 that Canon finally came up with the first professional-grade full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R, announcing its entry into the professional-grade mirrorless camera market.
Canon's current mirrorless product line is still dominated by mainstream consumer-grade APS-C products, which Canon calls the EOS-M system. There are four models: M5, M6, M50 and M100. The naming strategy of Canon DSLR cameras has always been that the lower the number, the higher the grade of the product, and the Canon mirrorless is no exception. However, due to the low overall positioning of Canon's EOS-M system product line, the price and difference between these four models are also in the millimeter, unlike the difference between Canon's SLR models of different grades.
These models have a lot in common, first of all, all four models come with Canon's vaunted all-pixel dual-core focus technology, which guarantees that they all have reliable autofocus and focus tracking performance. Canon's video autofocus is the best in its price range, with facial recognition that allows you to bite down on a person's face to focus. Secondly, all four models have a 180-degree flip-out touchscreen for multi-angle framing and selfies, making them inexpensive V-Log cameras. It is worth mentioning that Canon's portrait skin tones are highly praised, and the face photos taken are naturally colored, white and red. But the Canon's machine has its share of the problem, as Canon's pure-lens stabilization often looks stretched thin in video shoots compared to competitors that use 5-axis stabilization technology everywhere.
Although the positioning of the M5 is higher than that of the M50 in terms of naming, the M50 was released later, the electronic performance is more advanced, and it is the only model among the four models that supports 4K video shooting, and the continuous shooting speed is also the fastest, with a price of less than 4000 yuan, which is currently the most worthwhile model to buy in the Canon EOS-M system, and Dpreview rated it as the best entry-level interchangeable lens camera in 2018.
In Canon's product line, the overall positioning of EOS R is between EOS 5D and EOS 7D, and the current price is about 15,000 yuan. Canon's DSLR cameras have always been known for their handling, and the design is fully functional to meet the requirements, so in order to give photographers who have used Canon cameras a familiar and consistent control experience, product changes often do not easily change the size of the handle, the layout of the buttons. Although the EOS R is a newly designed camera category of Canon, it also inherits a lot of design elements from the DSLR in terms of handling, and the appearance looks like the EOS 7D has been flattened, the only difference is that the EOS R has added a new multi-function touch bar, but this is also the most controversial design element.
The EOS R uses a 30.3-million-pixel full-frame sensor, all-pixel dual-core focus with a modest 8 frames per second continuous shooting speed, supports 4K video shooting but has a large crop factor, and is positioned in the professional grade but does not support dual card slots, which does not reach the extreme level in either direction. In terms of product positioning and pricing, the competitors are the Sony A7M3 and Nikon Z6, and the EOS R is the only full-frame mirrorless camera with a 360-degree foldable touchscreen for selfies. However, as a professional model, the EOS R is inferior to the competing Sony A7M3 in terms of the core functions of the camera such as focus, continuous shooting, image stabilization, video, tolerance, high-sensitivity performance, battery life, and card slot, not to mention the maturity of the system.
Although the performance of the EOS R is mediocre in all aspects, it is still a recommended product in combination with the price of about 15,000 yuan, especially for old users who have a Canon full-frame SLR lens in their hands, which can greatly reduce the cost of learning and acquisition. For everyday needs such as shooting portraits, or shooting 1080p videos, the Canon EOS R has better performance.
While Canon's DSLR has an unrivalled large lens complexion, the EOS-M mirrorless system has only 7 lenses, which is barely enough. The Canon full-frame mirrorless camera just started at the end of 2018, using a new RF mount, although there are bulls like 28-70mmF2, but the price is high, and there are only 4 RF lenses in total, and the rest can only be transferred to the past Canon SLR lenses through the adapter ring, which is inconvenient to use and has a loss of performance. Although Canon says it will release more RF lenses in the future, it is still far from mature compared to Sony's full-frame system.
