Founded in 1871 and headquartered in Hannover, Germany, Continental is the world's third largest tire manufacturer and Europe's largest auto parts supplier. The company's initial products were rubber products and solid carriage and bicycle tires.

Continental Tyres is a leading global supplier of braking systems, chassis components, vehicle electronics, tires and high-tech rubber. In 2005, the company generated sales of 13.8 billion euros. Today, the company employs 80,000 people worldwide. Continental Tyres is currently divided into 4 segments: Tires for Cars and Light Trucks, Industrial and Commercial Tires, Vehicle Automation Systems and Continental Technology ContiTech. The company manufactures tires for passenger cars, commercial and industrial tires, tires for two-wheeled vehicles, hydraulic and electronic braking systems (ESC, ABS, TCS), as well as electronic suspension systems. Other products for the automotive industry include mechanical transmissions and suspension anti-vibration systems. ContiTech, a German technology company, also supplies products for the machine building, mining, furniture and printing industries.

Continental in China

Since Continental entered China in 1996, Continental has been cooperating with SAIC. In the past 10 years, the group's branches have established more than 10 joint ventures in Shanghai, Changchun, Ningbo, Zhangjiagang and other places. Recently, Continental Automotive Systems also acquired the electronic control components used in the production of electronic braking systems and body electronic modules from its joint ventures, Shanghai United Investment Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Xintai Industrial Co., Ltd., to form a wholly-owned company, Shanghai Continental Automotive Systems. In 2004, Continental Automotive Systems set up a joint venture in Lianyungang specializing in the production of automotive sensors.  On May 18, 2011, Continental Tyre's first plant in China was officially opened in Hefei. With a total investment of more than 185 million euros, the plant will meet the needs of the tire market in China and the Asia-Pacific region. The production line is equipped with production facilities with a high level of automation, and the production capacity can be flexibly increased according to production needs. At present, the first phase of the plant has been completed, with an annual design capacity of 4 million car tires. In the future, the new plant will also expand its existing production capacity to achieve an annual production capacity of 16 million passenger car tires. At present, the tires produced by the factory have obtained the China 3C certificate.
