History
In late 2002, Reid gathered a team of old colleagues from SocialNet and PayPal to implement a new idea. Six months later, LinkedIn was officially launched. Initial membership growth was slow, with at least 20 members registered per day. But in the fall of 2003, LinkedIn showed its full potential and managed to attract investment from Sequoia Capital.
At the end of 2003, the user growth began to accelerate with the introduction of the address book upload function. In addition, LinkedIn introduced a new feature called Groups and partnered with American Express to improve its services for small business owners.
LinkedIn introduces the first business chain: job titles and user subscriptions. The company also moved into its fourth office in three years.
2006 Foundation
With the launch of the public profile feature, LinkedIn set out to build its database of professional profiles. The company turned a profit that year and introduced core features such as letters of recommendation, members you might know, and more.
2007 Growth
After four years as CEO of LinkedIn, Reid invited Dan Nye to lead the company and took a back seat to take charge of product operations. LinkedIn moved to Stierlin Court and set up a customer service center in Omaha.
In 2008, it went global
LinkedIn became a truly global company, opening its first overseas office in London and launching LinkedIn in Spanish and French.
2009 New Leader
Jeff Weiner joined LinkedIn as President and later as CEO. His arrival brings more focus and clarity to LinkedIn's mission, values, and strategic priorities.
2010 Acceleration
LinkedIn ushered in a phase of rapid growth. At the end of 2010, LinkedIn had 90 million registered members and nearly 1,000 employees in 10 offices around the world.
2011 Next step
LinkedIn celebrated its eighth anniversary, successfully listed on the New York Stock Exchange, became an international publicly traded company, and hosted a Silicon Valley town hall meeting with President Barack Obama. What's next for LinkedIn?
2012 Change
The technical overhaul and website redesign led to unprecedented product innovation and technological change for the website and the company, and focused LinkedIn's product strategy on three core concepts: Simplify, Grow, and Everyday.
2013 LinkedIn celebrates its 10th anniversary
LinkedIn ushered in its first decade, with the company reaching 225 million registered members and growing at a rate of more than 2 people per second. This year, they have so much to celebrate.
2014 Next stop: China
As of April 2014, LinkedIn has more than 300 million registered members worldwide. LinkedIn began its strategic layout in China, opening its 26th global office in Beijing. On February 25, the beta version of LinkedIn Chinese Simplified was officially launched, and Chinese became the 22nd official language of LinkedIn.
On April 9, 2015, LinkedIn acquired lynda.com, an online education company, for $1.5 billion.
