Introduction to the Dürkopp Adler brand

The Dürkopp Adler logo

The famous sewing machine brand, founded in Germany in 1860, is committed to providing customers with solutions to problems in the field of sewing technology, focusing on the production of industrial sewing machines and conveyor equipment business

Bielefeld in the mid-19th century: The Industrial Revolution turned the city into an important textile industrial base. Sewing machines imported (mainly from the United States) are used for further processing of the fabric, which are expensive and difficult to maintain. Two machinists, Baer and Koch, saw the opportunity and founded the first sewing machine factory in Bielefeld in 1860.

Over the next two decades, Bielefeld developed into one of the most important producers of sewing machines in Germany. By 1880, there were 19 companies in Bielefeld in the sector, and their products were internationally renowned and sold in Europe.

After the death of the founder of Dürkopp, the company was renamed Dürkoppwerke AG. In the late twenties of the twentieth century, the global economic crisis forced the company to halt its already unsuccessful automobile production business. At the end of the Weimar Republic, the company developed the first generation of conveyor systems for the textile industry and opened up new markets. To this day, the company is still in business.

After the end of the Second World War, the Kochs Adler sewing machine company also tried to develop new business areas, such as the production of typewriters and packaging machines, but soon abandoned these businesses and the field of domestic sewing machines. Since the 60s, Dürkoppwerke AG has also focused its activities exclusively on industrial sewing machines and conveyors.

In 1962, FAG Kugelfischer acquired a majority stake in Dürkoppwerke AG. Twenty-five years later, the Kugelfischer Group acquired a majority stake in Kochs Adler AG, which cleared the way for the merger of the two competing companies. In 1990, the combined company changed its name to Dürkopp Adler AG and started a new operation in the Oldentrup district of Bielefeld.

On July 1, 2005, Shanggong Shenbei (Group) Co., Ltd. from Shanghai, China, acquired a majority stake in Dürkopp Adler AG from FAG Kugelfischer GmbH in Schweinfurt, Germany.

On July 1, 2010, Dürkopp Transmission Technology GmbH was sold to Knapp AG in Graz, Austria.

On October 28, 2010, the German subsidiary of Zhongjie Sewing Machine Co., Ltd. acquired a 29 percent stake in Dürkopp Adler AG.

Today, Dürkopp Adler AG offers its customers solutions to problems in the field of sewing technology. The group company has a global service and sales network consisting of 11 subsidiaries, 2 joint ventures and more than 80 authorized dealers around the world. The aim of the company is to improve the automation of production processes and at the same time to ensure a high degree of flexibility.

Extensive consulting and reliable service ensure that the company's products are at the top of the world in all major market segments. The pioneering and innovative spirit of the company's founders has become an important part of the corporate philosophy and will continue to develop through the creative potential of all employees.
