Etihad Airways was established in July 2003 by Royal Decree. It began operations in November 2003 and has grown to become one of the fastest growing airlines in the history of commercial aviation.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates and headquartered in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is the second largest airline in the UAE after Dubai-based Emirates and the fourth largest in the Middle East. The Chairman of the Board of Directors is His Highness HH Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.


Etihad Airways is a member of the Arab Air Transport Organisation and a sponsor of Manchester City Football Club, and also operates two commercial branches, Etihad Holidays and Etihad Cargo, which commenced commercial operations in May 2004 and September 2004 respectively.

Based at Abu Dhabi International Airport, Etihad Airways flies to and from 86 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania and North America. Etihad Airways owns shares in Air Berlin, Air Seychelles, Virgin Atlantic Australia, Aer Lingus, Alitalia, Air Serbia, Jet Airways.

Etihad Airways in China

On 30 March 2008, Etihad Airways officially launched a direct flight from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, to Beijing, China, which is the first direct flight between the two capitals and the first new Etihad Airways route in 2008. Etihad Airways' new routes allow Chinese passengers to connect to a number of destinations in the Middle East, Europe and particularly Africa.

From 15 December 2011, Etihad Airways officially launched direct flights from Abu Dhabi to Chengdu, initially four times a week to Shuangliu International Airport, and from 30 March 2014 to one flight per day.

From 1 March 2012, Etihad Airways officially launched direct flights from Abu Dhabi to Shanghai, initially five times a week to Pudong International Airport, and from 15 April 2013 to one daily.
