Woolworths opened its first store on 5 December 1924. The shop is located in a basement on Pitt Street, which is surprisingly cheap. With nominal capital of £25,000, Woolworths started with 34 people holding shares, including five founders: Percy Christmas, Stanley Edward Chatterton, Cecil Scott Waine, George William Percival Creed and Ernest Robert Williams.

The core business of Woolworths is a family of supermarkets including the famous Woolworths, Safeway, Purity, RoelfVos.

Woolworths' EzyBanking venture is Australia's most honest supermarket bank, founded in 1999 and having reached 640 in 2000. In urban and shrubland areas, the company prides itself on being a national retailer and service provider, providing after-sales service to customers on a daily basis.

Today, Woolworths is Australia's largest food retailer and is proud to have a 75-year history of serving its customers. The Woolworths family of companies includes 15 trademarks. Woolworths employs more than 125,000 people across 1,114 stores across the country, with in fact one in every 100 Australian workforce employed.

Through Woolworths' wide range of Apprenticeship and Journeyman Schemes, we cater to the needs of a diverse range of trained and developed staff. Woolworths currently employs more than 4,000 people working day and night in a variety of areas of operation, including store management, transportation, distribution. Woolworths will also expand planning to incorporate information technology, business and office management. In order to enrich the experience of its staff, Woolworths is refining and pursuing more retail transaction plans, not only with other retailers, but also with other service organisations around the world.

Woolworths ranks second in Australia in terms of private employees, with 125,000 employees. Woolworths employs more than 45,000 young people in its operations.
