Founded in March 1981, Reader Magazine is a comprehensive digest magazine sponsored by Gansu People's Publishing House. Originally known as Reader's Digest, Reader's Digest was only 48 pages when it was first published in 1981, and it was a bimonthly magazine printed in black and white on newsprint with a triangular price. The magazine was founded one year ago and had a circulation of 160,000. At the end of 1982, the circulation reached 420,000. In 1983, the circulation exceeded 1.36 million, but the development of Reader's Digest was not without its challenges. In early 1982, the American "Reader's Digest" pointed out that the use of the Chinese name of "Reader's Digest" by the Gansu People's Publishing House was improper and did not comply with international copyright agreements. The years-long dispute over the copyright of Reader's Digest between China and the United States began. Beginning in 1990, the dispute over the copyright of Reader's Digest between China and the United States escalated again. In 1992, a lawyer commissioned by the American "Reader's Digest" sent a letter to the Chinese "Reader's Digest", requesting that the use of the Chinese trademark "Reader's Digest" be stopped. Later, in order to resolve the copyright dispute with the American "Reader's Digest", the March 1993 issue of "Reader's Digest" published a notice for name calling, which aroused strong repercussions among readers, and received more than 100,000 letters of application. The new names mentioned in the letter are: Reader, Reader's Home, Chatter, Sharing, etc. Finally, the name "Reader" was used. In the seventh issue of 1993, Reader's Digest was officially renamed Reader. At present, the monthly circulation is 7 million copies, ranking among the highest in Asia and China.
