China National Geographic, formerly known as Geographical Knowledge, is a monthly journal about geography, and its articles and pictures are often reprinted by the central and local media. It has strong readability and collection value, and many libraries at home and abroad have taken the journal as a key collection periodical. Focusing on the geography of China, the content combines the natural and cultural landscapes and events of different regions around the world, revealing their backgrounds and mysteries, as well as astronomy, biology, history and archaeology. It is a well-known geographical magazine in Chinese mainland. Because the society is affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, there are a large number of experts and scholars in physical geography and human geography as consultants of the society, and there are also many workers who are fighting in the front line of scientific research to maintain close contact with the magazine, so it has a strong exclusivity and authority.

Geographical Knowledge, the predecessor of China National Geographic, was founded in 1950 in Nanjing. At that time, the entire magazine was only 8 pages, and a year later it had increased to 16 pages. At that time, the content included geographical thought, Chinese and foreign geography, physical geography, maps and geographical survey methods, geography teaching, geographical data, etc.

In 1954, Geographical Knowledge suffered a blow when it published articles revealing China's domestic industrial geography, which were considered "leaks" by Chinese officials. Soon after, however, the influence wore off, and the magazine continued to expand, reaching 48 pages by 1957 with a circulation of 20,000 copies.

In July 1960, the publication was suspended for the first time, and in 1961 it was renamed Geography and republished.

It ceased publication for the second time in March 1966.

Some scientific journals in Chinese mainland suffered major blows during the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, and in 1972, Geographical Knowledge was republished. Geographical Knowledge was no exception, and during this period, the publication of Geographical Knowledge was very volatile and intermittent, and the situation only improved after the end of the Cultural Revolution.

In 1998, the magazine was completely revised, increasing the number of pages to 84 pages, and the following year to 100 pages. From black and white to full color, from offset paper to coated paper, the price increased from 4.9 yuan to 16 yuan.

In October 2000, the magazine was renamed National Geographic of China, and was subsequently launched in traditional Chinese and even Japanese in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan.

In 2004, National Geographic of China grew to 148 pages and launched a youth edition of Naturalist.

In October 2005, on the occasion of its 55th anniversary, the 550-page special issue of "Beauty Pageant China" was launched, with a record 550,000 copies published. The special issue was well received by consumers, and it was sold out as soon as it was launched, and there were even cases of hoarding and price gouging at newsstands in some areas.

In March 2008, China Heritage officially became a member of the National Geographic magazine of China.

In July 2008, the traditional Chinese version of Hong Kong and Macao was directly rolled in Hong Kong as a "Chinese business card".

In January 2009, the price of the magazine was raised to 20 yuan, and the page number was increased to 176 pages.

In April 2009, the English version of China National Geographic was officially published.

The year 2010 marks the 60th anniversary of National Geographic of China, and the magazine has organized four activities: revisiting the most influential ideas, soliciting the places that have changed the most, searching for the families that have been read for 60 years, and "Campus Travelers".
