Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University is a comprehensive teaching hospital under the Ministry of Health. Founded in 1937, Zhongshan Hospital was the first large-scale general hospital managed by Chinese at that time, affiliated to the National Shanghai Medical College, named Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital in honor of Mr. Sun Yat-sen, the pioneer of China's democratic revolution, and later renamed Zhongshan Hospital. After liberation, it was called Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai First Medical College and Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Medical University, and its current name was adopted in 2001.

After more than 70 years of development, the headquarters of Zhongshan Hospital currently covers an area of 95,892.1 square meters, with a total construction area of 326149 square meters and 1,700 approved beds. In 2011, there were 2.77 million outpatient and emergency visits, 75,000 discharged patients, and 49,000 inpatient surgical patients. There are 3,090 employees in the hospital, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 370 senior titles, 1,114 physicians (including 205 standardized training bases for resident doctors), 1,205 nurses and 380 medical technicians.

The hospital has advanced medical equipment, including Adaptive Radiotherapy System (Tomo), PET-CT, 320-slice 640-slice ultra-speed spiral CT, all-digital flatbed cardiovascular imaging machine (DSA), linear accelerator, 3.0T magnetic resonance tomography, da Vinci robotic surgical system, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), digital X-ray imaging system (DR), intensive care system and telemedicine teaching system, etc.
