Tracing back to history, West China Hospital originated from Renji and Cunren Hospitals, which were founded in Chengdu in 1892 by Christian churches in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other countries. West China Medical College originated from the medical department of West China Union University in 1914, and was established by the churches of the United States, Canada, and Britain according to the Western medical education model. In 1937, when the Anti-Japanese War broke out, Central University, Yenching University, Qilu University, Jinling University, and Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences moved to Chengdu to jointly run a school and run a medical school with West China Union University. At that time, Huaxiba masters gathered, famous scholars gathered, and the academic grandeur was unprecedented. In 1938, Huada, CUHK and Qi University, which had medical schools, established a joint hospital; In 1946, the West China Union University Hospital was built at the current site, referred to as West China Hospital.

In 1950, the New Chinese People's Government took over West China Union University; In 1953, the department was adjusted to Sichuan Medical College, and the hospital was renamed the Affiliated Hospital of Sichuan Medical College. In 1985, Sichuan Medical College was renamed West China Medical University, and the hospital was renamed the First Affiliated Hospital of West China Medical University. In 2000, Sichuan University merged with West China Medical University, and the college/hospital was renamed West China Clinical Medical College/West China Hospital, Sichuan University.

At present, West China Hospital has gradually formed a research chain of translational medicine in West China that specializes in the transformation of medical achievements. In 2012, with the support of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, the Chengdu Municipal Science and Technology Bureau and the government of the High-tech Zone, the Western Medical Technology Transfer Center was jointly established, and was approved as the "National Technology Transfer Demonstration Institution" by the Ministry of Science and Technology. At the end of 2014, it was approved to build the first translational medicine engineering technology research center in the province. At the same time, relying on the State Key Laboratory, various open laboratories, public technology platforms, the National GLP Center, the National GCP Base, the National Primate Laboratory Animal Base (a national macaque breeding base with a population size of more than 3,000 heads), the National New Drug Efficacy Evaluation Center and other platforms, the hospital has built an innovative industrial service chain from original research and development to production and circulation of new drug creation.

The hospital has long undertaken the work of supporting 10,000 doctors in rural areas, urban and rural hospitals and the training of key doctors, and has supported more than 10 grassroots hospitals such as Ganzi Prefecture People's Hospital, Shiqu County People's Hospital, Yajiang County People's Hospital, Yilong County People's Hospital, Tianquan County People's Hospital, Jingyan County People's Hospital, etc., through the forms of fixed-point assistance, ward round guidance, management training, equipment support, two-way referral, remote teaching and difficult consultation, etc., to promote the training of health talents in primary medical institutions. It has played an important role in improving its medical service capacity and level and improving its own hematopoietic ability. Every year, more than 2,000 trainees (including long-term advanced study, short-term special technical study, short-term visit and study, etc.) are recruited, covering 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government, so that the trainees can grow into the technical backbone of grassroots hospitals, especially at the provincial, municipal, and county levels. Relying on the West China telemedicine network platform, the remote continuing medical education and training system with West China characteristics has covered 574 medical institutions in 15 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government, training 370,000 medical personnel at the grassroots level every year, and remotely guiding more than 2,400 cases of diagnosis and treatment of difficult and severe patients.

The development performance and management level of the hospital have been fully affirmed by the party and government at all levels, and have also been unanimously praised by domestic and foreign counterparts and mainstream media.
