Peking Union Medical College Hospital is a large-scale tertiary first-class general hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching and scientific research, a national guidance center for the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and critical diseases designated by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, and one of the earliest hospitals to undertake the medical tasks of senior cadres and foreign guests. From 2010 to 2015, it ranked first in the "Best Hospitals in China" published by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University for six consecutive years.
The hospital was built in 1921 and founded by the Rockefeller Foundation. At the beginning of its establishment, the hospital was determined to "build the best medical center in Asia". Over the past 95 years, the hospital has formed the spirit of "rigorous, refined, diligent and dedicated" and the characteristic cultural style of inclusiveness, created the modern medical education concept of "three basics" and "three stricts", formed the "three treasures" of Xiehe known as "professors, medical records and libraries", cultivated a generation of medical masters such as Zhang Xiaoqian and Lin Qiaozhi and a number of leading figures of modern Chinese medicine, and sent a large number of medical management talents to the whole country, creating more than 10 well-known large-scale general and specialized hospitals. In 2011, on the basis of summarizing 90 years of development experience, it innovatively proposed "treating patients as relatives and improving patient satisfaction; Treat colleagues as family members and improve the happiness of employees".
At present, the hospital has 2 campuses with a total construction area of 530,000 square meters, more than 4,000 employees, 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 54 clinical and medical technology departments, 20 national key disciplines, 29 national key clinical specialties, 16 doctoral programs, 29 master's programs, 6 national continuing medical education bases, 18 second-level discipline residency training bases, and 15 third-level discipline specialist training bases. There are more than 2,000 open inpatient beds, with a maximum daily outpatient volume of about 15,000 and an annual discharge of about 80,000 patients. It was rated as "National Civilized Unit", "National Pioneer and Priority Grassroots Party Organization", "National Advanced Collective of Health System", "Civilized Unit of Capital Health System", "Most Popular Tertiary Hospital", and won the National May Day Labor Medal. At the same time, the hospital also undertakes the important task of supporting the main medical team of the old and young in the marginal and poor areas, important national activities and emergencies, and won the "Special Contribution Award" in the work of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
