Founded in 1946, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital is the largest general hospital in Guangdong Province and one of the largest and most comprehensive hospitals in China. The hospital has a construction area of nearly 230,000 square meters and 5,174 employees, including 4,169 health technicians and 711 senior professional titles. At present, there are more than 2,500 inpatient beds, nearly 90,000 discharged patients and 90,000 surgeries per year. The hospital has six outpatient departments, with more than 3.7 million outpatient visits, with an average of more than 10,000 visits per day.
In May 2008, the Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences was established and co-located with the Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, which has a number of clinical, teaching and scientific research institutions such as the Guangdong Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, the Guangdong Institute of Geriatrics, the Guangdong Institute of Mental Health, the Guangdong Institute of Lung Cancer, the Guangdong Institute of Eye Disease Prevention and Control, and the Guangdong Institute of Neuroscience. The hospital has two branches, Huifu and Pingzhou. Huifu Branch has three major characteristics: medical oncology, psychiatry and psychology, and health examination. At present, Pingzhou Branch specializes in dermatology and rehabilitation medicine.

In the early 50s of the last century, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital undertook the clinical teaching work of Sun Yat-sen Medical College, Jinan University School of Medicine and Guangdong Provincial School of Pharmacy, and was rated as "Teaching Hospital of Higher Medical Colleges" in 1997.
