The first store opened in Lau Pa Sat in 1944 and has opened nearly 100 outlets in more than 10 countries. At the beginning of its establishment, Yakun opened the Singapore market with thin slices of brown toast and sweet kaya, and over the past 70 years, the word Yakun has almost become synonymous with kaya toast.
Kaya toast began as roasted toast in the West, and the Nanyang people creatively added kaya to their toast, thus creating a style of its own. Brewed with milk, eggs, coconut milk and cane sugar, kaya sauce has a burnt, crispy and sweet flavor, and some cannabe has an olive green color thanks to the addition of colorful leaves. Kaya butter toast is Yakun's most classic dish, the brown toast used is light and thin, baked or charcoal-grilled with a crispy texture, and then thickly coated with a layer of kaya paste, plus a slice of cold butter to eat, the important point is that the butter must have just been taken out of the freezer, if it is heated and melted in advance, the taste is not good. The kaya sauce is sweet but not greasy, with a hint of coconut and colorful leaf fragrance, and the coldness of the butter and the warmth of the toast are also quite hot and cold. If you're looking for an authentic Singaporean breakfast, you can also order a healthy egg pairing. The healthy egg is only three or four ripe hot spring eggs, and the authentic way to eat them is to break them into a small dish with an iron spoon, then add dark soy sauce and white pepper, and stir them well to eat them alone or for toast dipping.
Yakun's cuisine is not very diverse, except for kaya toast, only a few kinds of noodles and rice are served. Hainanese chicken rice is also one of Singapore's classics, Ya Kun is made by soaking it in chicken fat to give the rice a fragrant aroma, but the chilled chicken is of average quality and slightly loose. The soup of laksa rice noodles is made with curry mixed with coconut milk, and after the rice noodles are added to the soup, a lot of chili oil is added, and the color is orange and yellow, but the proportion of coconut milk is too high, and the taste is too thick. Overall, light meals are not as successful as kaya toast.
Yakun's three stores in Chongqing are all located in the mall, and the environment is simple, with a combination of wooden tables, chairs and green plants. The restaurant has limited service staff and has no other services other than ordering and pick-up. The toast is freshly baked, so there will be a waiting time after ordering.
