Peace Hotel, formerly known as Chinachem Hotel, was the most prestigious hotel in Shanghai in the 30s of the last century, and was renamed Peace Hotel after being rebuilt in World War II. The hotel's founder, Sir Victor Sassoon, has a lavish and high-end social lifestyle that has been passed down to this day, and in addition to the elegant afternoon tea at the Jasmine Lounge, the social tea dance is also a repertoire every Saturday afternoon. In the evening, the jazz bar next to the lounge has a lively atmosphere, and it is still alive and well after decades of opening. Although the consumption here is not expensive, its temperament is more attractive to people above the middle class, and the most impressive thing for young people is also "the hotel designated by Leslie Cheung to stay that year".
The Jasmine Lounge is simple and low-key, without losing the ancient charm, surrounded by a confined space surrounded by walls, which is completely different from the natural scenery of the star-rated hotel, and you can sit down and feel quiet. The shape of the afternoon tea is also very aesthetically pleasing, the metal three-tiered shelves are not simply using trays to hold pastries, but the food is placed on the metal racks, and the shape is staggered, and one side is decorated with flowering vines and greenery, adding to the classical Chinese beauty.
However, the taste of afternoon tea is inferior to its appearance, and the performance of more than a dozen dim sum is uneven. For example, the cherry blossom afternoon tea launched in early 2018, the cherry blossom pink color is very pleasing to girls, but too much attention is paid to color jumping, and the taste of fondant biscuits, chocolate and macarons are mediocre. The scones go well with jam and cream, but unfortunately the alkaline flavor is slightly stronger, which affects the taste. Foie gras bread is not well handled, and the fishy smell is also on the heavy side. In contrast, berry flavored protein tart, marshmallows, and custard, as well as mushroom pies and sandwiches are all good. The traditional English tea is very stable, the high-quality tea is resistant to brewing and does not astringent, and you can add white square tang and red square sugar by yourself, and the tea taste is long.
The Jasmine Lounge is home to a Steinway piano from the twenties. On Saturday afternoons, the café is rearranged to make room for a dance floor, where pianists play on the small balcony above the lounge and guests dance to the music, reminiscent of the social scene of old Shanghai high society. This is a unique afternoon tea atmosphere in Shanghai, and many guests are willing to bring their parents or significant other to spend their special anniversaries here.
The waiters are professionally trained and the service is impeccable. Even if you bring a foreign friend, the foreign waiter can be greeted in fluent English, so you don't have to worry about communication barriers.
