CUHK High School was founded as early as 1924, but due to historical changes such as wars and political movements, the school was dismantled, co-established and discontinued many times until 1993, when it was reopened under the "state-owned and private" system. Due to the fact that CUHK High School is a private institution, the tuition fee is relatively high, and it is difficult to retain the top junior high school students, so the high school of CUHK High School is inferior to that of junior high school.

Although it is inferior to that of junior high schools, the quality of high schools affiliated to CUHK is still improving. The CUHK High School campus is located within Sun Yat-sen University, which can share the educational and teaching resources of CUHK such as faculty, equipment and venues, and has first-class hardware facilities. The school has a beautiful environment, lush vegetation, blue bricks and yellow walls, and an antique campus that is in the same vein as CUHK. The school has a clear division of teaching areas between the upper secondary school and the junior high school, and the combination of the names of the five main buildings is not only the motto of CUHK High School, but also the motto of CUHK.

As of 2016, CUHK High School has more than 140 faculty members, including 110 full-time teachers, including 30 senior teachers and 40 first-level teachers. All the teachers of the school graduated from the key normal colleges in the country, one of whom has a doctoral degree, and 15% of the teachers are master's students. There are more than 20 teachers who serve as chairmen, directors or special teaching and research members of provincial, municipal and district discipline teaching and research center groups. In addition, the school has a number of foreign teachers hired from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan and Germany.

Backed by CUHK, CUHK High School has abundant and high-quality educational and teaching resources, such as the "Cloud Ladder Project" in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering of CUHK, the high school science experimental class supported by Yat-sen College, and the German and Japanese elective courses of the School of Foreign Languages. Among them, the high school science experimental class is the key class of the school, enrolling 45 students, and the minimum score in 2016 is 700 points. As a special high school course of the school, the "Cloud Ladder Project" is carried out in the science experimental class, which provides students with resources such as key laboratories of CUHK to create better learning conditions. The programme is divided into 10 fields at three levels: general education, potential development and research, focusing on students' sense of innovation and practical ability.

In addition, CUHK High School has implemented a tutor system since the first year of senior high school, with tutors including teachers, CUHK professors and postgraduate students, to provide personalized guidance to students in terms of psychology and learning. Every year, the university also invites academicians and professors to give lectures on science and technology, Lingnan culture, economy and society, etc., to broaden students' knowledge. In terms of the amount of homework, the high school is about the same as the middle school, with fewer questions but more make-up classes.

The school's activities are rich and colorful, and the clubs are active, and the "Yat-sen Art Festival" and "Boji Science and Technology Festival" are held alternately throughout the semester. At the same time, CUHK High School has distinctive characteristics of science and technology education, with 11 series of activities, including scientific and technological innovation practice, robot experiments, computer production, model sea and model airplanes, and field surgery examinations, all of which are incorporated into the curriculum system. Its students have been shortlisted for many national innovation competitions, won the "Provincial Association for Science and Technology Chairman Award", and some students have been qualified to participate in the Intel International Science and Engineering Grand Prix.

Every year, dormitory students participate in housekeeping competitions, various exercise activities, and dormitory competitions. Students can eat in the CUHK canteen, which has a rich selection of dishes and high quality, but because the canteen is shared with university students, the number of people in the canteen is large, and the university also allows students to eat off-campus.
