Rooted in China to create brilliance together
Cummins' historical ties with China date back more than half a century to the 1940s. On March 11, 1941, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Lend-Lease Act to provide wartime assistance to 38 countries, including China. Among the military aid materials provided to China under the Lend-Lease Act are Jiangfang patrol boats and military trucks equipped with Cummins engines.
At the end of 1944, a Chongqing company sent a letter to Cummins to seek business ties to localize the production of Cummins engines in China, and Ervin Miller, then general manager of Cummins Engine Company, expressed strong interest in this letter, hoping that Cummins would be able to build a factory in China after the end of the Sino-Japanese War. For reasons that are well known, Mr. Miller's idea could only be realized thirty years later, in the 1970s, with the gradual détente in Sino-American relations.
Cummins is the first foreign-funded diesel engine company to set up a R&D center in China, and in August 2006, Cummins and Dongfeng Co., Ltd. jointly established an engine technology R&D center in Wuhan, Hubei Province.
After more than 30 years of development, Cummins has become an integral part of China's engine industry, and has made its own contribution to the modernization of China's engine industry through joint ventures/sole proprietorship production and technology transfer.
