KOTANYI was founded in 1881 by Janos KOTANYI with a passion for cooking and exploration. Fascinated by the magical power of spices and their wonderful aromas and tastes, he decided to open his first "paprika mill". There, he developed his proprietary "Secret Recipe for Sweet Paprika". The quality of the paprika mixture led to the appointment of Janos Darveys in Austria as the "Imperial and Royal Purveyor to the Court".

Shortly thereafter, he fulfilled his long-cherished dream of expanding his paprika mill into a vanilla and spice mill. Later, he began to source a variety of exotic condiments from all over the world and introduce them to Europe. The company's secret recipes and ownership have been passed down from generation to generation, thus continuing the passion for quality improvement and the backbone of the company's success over the past 127 years. Today, the company's spices, herbs and condiments are sold in more than 20 countries, including Central and Eastern Europe, South America and China.
