Brand Journey

In 1933, Sol Koffler, the founder of the AMERICAN TOURISTER brand, had the initial desire to create a "sturdy and economical" suitcase. HE USED ALL HIS SAVINGS AND ENERGY TO FULFILL HIS DREAM, AND IN 1933 HE ESTABLISHED THE "AMERICAN LUGGAGE" FACTORY IN PROVIDENCE, THE CAPITAL OF RHODE ISLAND, UNITED STATES, WHICH WAS LATER RENAMED "AMERICAN TOURISTER", AND SOON BECAME A HOUSEHOLD NAME IN THE UNITED STATES AND THE LUGGAGE BRAND OF CHOICE FOR AMERICAN FAMILIES.

IN 1945, WITH THE RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF AIR TRAVEL, THE DEMAND FOR LIGHTWEIGHT LUGGAGE ROSE DRAMATICALLY, AND THE HI-TAPER TAPERED LIGHTWEIGHT SUITCASE FROM AMERICAN TOURISTER WAS BORN.

IN 1946, AMERICAN TOURISTER INVESTED $12,000 TO BECOME THE FIRST LUGGAGE BRAND TO BEGIN A NATIONAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN IN THE UNITED STATES.

IN THE 50S, CONTINUOUS "TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION" HELPED THE COMPANY CONTINUE TO GROW RAPIDLY, AND AMERICAN TOURISTER INTRODUCED THE WORLD'S FIRST MOLDED LUGGAGE USING NEW MATERIALS.

IN THE 60S, INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL BECAME POPULAR, AND AMERICAN TOURISTER WAS TRUSTED BY CONSUMERS AND WAS THE FIRST LUGGAGE BRAND TO BE CHOSEN BY MAJOR AIRLINES.

IN THE 70S, AMERICAN TOURISTER WAS PLANNED BY HENGMEI DDB ADVERTISING AGENCY AND LAUNCHED THE "GORILLA" ADVERTISING PLAN, AND THE IMAGE OF THE RAVAGED BUT STILL INTACT SUITCASE IN THE FILM MADE ITS REPUTATION FOR HIGH QUALITY BEGIN TO BE RECITED BY USERS AROUND THE WORLD.

In 1993, Samsonite acquired the Samsonite brand, which was then the largest competitor in the United States, American TOURISTER, and operated as Samsonite's internationally renowned luggage brand in a unified global world, with independent advertising, marketing, development and purchasing systems.
