Qualcomm is an American radio communication technology research and development company, founded in July 1985, plays an important role in promoting the development of wireless communication with technological innovation, and is known for its leading position in CDMA technology, which has become the world's leading wireless technology. Qualcomm places a strong emphasis on research and development and has licensed the technology to more than 100 manufacturers for all of the world's telecommunications and consumer electronics brands.
Qualcomm develops and delivers innovative digital wireless communications products and services based on its CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) digital technology. Today, Qualcomm is actively advocating the rapid deployment of 3G networks, mobile phones and applications around the world. Headquartered in San Diego, California, Qualcomm is a component of the S&P 500 index, and the company's business covers technology-leading 3G chipsets, system software, development tools and products, technology licensing, BREW application development platform, QChat, BREWChatVoIP solution technology, QPoint positioning solutions, Eudora e-mail software, including two-way data communication systems, Comprehensive wireless solutions such as wireless consulting and network management services, MediaFLO system and GSM1x technology. Qualcomm holds more than 3,000 patents and patent applications for CDMA and other technologies, which have been widely adopted or recommended by standards bodies around the world. Qualcomm has licensed CDMA patents to more than 125 telecom equipment manufacturers worldwide.
As an emerging technology, CDMA is quickly taking the world by storm and already accounts for 20% of the wireless market. At present, there are more than 256 million CDMA users worldwide, and 156 operators in 70 countries have commercialized 3GCDMA services. In 2002, Qualcomm's chip sales hit a historic record; Since 1994, Qualcomm has supplied more than 1.5 billion chips to many manufacturers around the world, including China.
History
In July 1985, seven visionaries gathered at the home of Dr. Irwin Jacobs in San Diego to discuss the plan. These visionaries – Franklin Antonio, Adelia Coffman, Andrew Cohen, Klein Gilhousen, Irwin Jacbos, Andrew Viterbi and Harvey White – finally agreed to create "QUALity COMMunications", THEIR BLUEPRINT HAS LED TO QUALCOMM, THE BRIGHTEST RISING STAR IN THE TELECOM INDUSTRY 20 YEARS LATER.
At the beginning of its establishment, Qualcomm mainly provided project research and development services for the wireless communication industry, and also involved in limited product manufacturing. One of the company's initial goals is to develop a commercial product. The result was OmniTRACS®. Since 1988, when the freight industry adopted Qualcomm's OmniTRACS system, it has become the largest commercial mobile satellite communications system in the transportation industry.
Early successes emboldened the company to innovate and challenge traditional standards for wireless technology. In 1989, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) endorsed a digital technology called Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). Just three months later, when the industry was still skeptical, Qualcomm introduced Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology for wireless and data products – and it changed the face of wireless communications around the world forever.
Today, Qualcomm has more than 3,900 U.S. patents and patent applications for CDMA and related technologies. Qualcomm has licensed CDMA patents to more than 130 telecom equipment manufacturers worldwide. For more than two decades, Qualcomm has led the way people communicate, work and live with its pioneering technology and enterprising spirit.
Qualcomm's reputation for excellence extends far beyond the CDMA space. Qualcomm is a member of the S&P 500 index, a Fortune 500 company, and a recipient of the U.S. Department of Labor's Secretary of Labor's Opportunity Award. Qualcomm's exceptional work environment, dedication and professionalism have earned Qualcomm one of Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work for six consecutive years and a spot on Industry Week's "100 Best Managed Companies" list. CIO magazine also named Qualcomm Inc. one of the top 100 companies with the best operational and strategic excellence.
