Historical origins A good history in business since 1876
Like many well-meaning people who choose to go for a relaxing weekend, we didn't start out in the cleaning industry – it just happened. In 1876, Melville R. BISSELL and his wife, Anna, owned a small pottery business in Michigan (you know what it feels like?). As a result, Melville invented and patented a unique carpet sweeper. When customers and friends started asking if they could buy a carpet sweeper, a new company was born.

When Melville BISSELL died in 1889, his wife, Anne, continued to run the company, continuing the housekeeping business, becoming the first female CEO in the United States. Then, in the late '80s, when New Kids On The Block was singing "Hangin' Tough," we did the opposite and created and launched BISSELL SC, the company's first deep cleaner that was no longer limited to the water source in our home. As a result, carpet deep cleaning has become more effective and convenient than ever before, and that's the path we continue to stick to, creating the BISSELL Big Green CleanMachine® brand, known as the "Super Dad" of deep cleaning. In 2011, she founded the BISSELL Pet Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that funds the adoption of lost, abused, neglected and abandoned pets by raising funds from the sale of BISSELL pet products. Since its inception, the BISSELL Pet Foundation has awarded more than $500,000 to more than 375 organisations in 43 states.
