In the early 1970s, NASA developed a pressure-absorbing material to reduce the enormous stress experienced by astronauts as they lifted off from the ground. The material is extremely sensitive to temperature and evenly distributes the weight of the body. In the 1980s, NASA made the material available to the public.
Another group of scientists, from the soon-to-be-merging Swedish company Fagerdala and Denmark's Dan-Foam, continues to work on NASA's invention. It took nearly a decade and millions of dollars in research to perfect space technology into TEMPUR materials and apply them to mattress products.
