In 1976, Sørnes invented a mechanical card-key door lock in Moss, Norway, and sold it to the Westin Peachtree Center in Atlanta, USA, in 1979. Over the next few years, VingCard continued to develop card-key door locks and launched the VingCard 3000 electronic door lock in 1992. So far, VingCard has completed a magnificent transformation from a simple door lock maker to a multi-billion dollar high-tech industry.
At the same time, Elsafe (based in Lexvik, Norway) introduced an electronic safe in guest rooms in 1976. This innovation makes metal key safes obsolete, significantly reduces maintenance costs, simplifies front desk operations, and provides guests with greater security and ease of use.
In 1994, VingCard and Elsafe became part of the larger independent door lock group ASSA ABLOY, which consists of more than 100 subsidiaries worldwide. In 1997, VingCard and Elsafe's global sales and market forces made them the largest providers of room security solutions. Over the next few years, VingCard and Elsafe continued to develop electronic door lock solutions and in-room safes, as well as a global sales network. The two companies merged in 2006 and now cover more than 166 countries worldwide.
